The bottom line is if Giannis and Dame play like the stars they are and everyone else fills their roles respectably, the Bucks can make a run.

Re: Bucks News, Transactions, Trade Ideas - Giannis out until after the break
We’ve had midseason pickups make big differences in the past.
Whether John Lucas, Stackhouse, Salmons or PJ.
All of them had big flaws, issues or were on the scrap heap.
Whether Kuzma or Porter Jr provide that we don’t know. But it’s plausible

The question (besides the health of Giannis and Dame in playoff time) which of the other players need to play well the most during the playoffs for that to happen.
I tend to think Lopez, but with his play this year I don't think it will happen.

Re: Bucks News, Transactions, Trade Ideas - Giannis out until after the break
Before we think about the playoffs. Let’s just please secure at least the 4th spot. It’s a loooooong way to win 4 series without HCA.
There is a possible sweep for Cleveland assuming they end up playing Butlerless Miami or always injured Philly. That makes it an even worse matchup assuming Bucks got dragged in a Game 7 against Indy or Orlando.
I like this season’s path. Bucks are more equipped than Indy/Orlando for the first round, then you have still not proven contender Cleveland and then you have the winner of an exhausting dogfight (Boston/Knicks).
A convincing 4-1 or 4-2 first round could do wonders in the confidence of this team after not succeeding to pass that the past two seasons. Let’s not make it harder than it already is.

If anyone had John Salmons turning into Paul Pierce on their bingo card let me know. Even 15yrs later that just seemed like 1 of the craziest outcomes I can ever remember. Dude was so good in a Bucks uniform the rest of that season, like other worldly good. We all heard of the hot stepper, he was the jab stepper.
RIP Kobe Forever. GOAT 8-24. Long Live Giannis

FTD Salmons was the craziest run I've probably ever seen from a random journeyman player. What's funny is that he was so damn good and at the same time we all knew there was no way that a 30-year old dude just magically took an All-Star leap after 8-years in the NBA. Well, everyone expect John Hammond...

KPJ taking off in Milwaukee seems a lot more plausible than what Salmons did.
He's the youngest player in NBA history to drop 50 points and 10 assists (against the Bucks) before he was 21.
Only 24 years old now but with his career on the brink (for very good reason).
All the minutes he could handle are available if he seizes the opportunity.
Maybe he thrives (or at least returns to career norms) with a more consistent role here?

Porter Jr. is posting some of his worst stats this season now as a reserve for the first time since his rookie year.
In just 20 minuters per game, his 9.3 points are about 10 points less than two years ago — his last NBA season — when he set a career-high 19.2 points. His free-throw shooting has dropped dramatically this season at 64.5%. It's about 14 points worse than the 2022-23 season.
His 24.5% three-point shooting is also a career low.
For his career, Porter is averaging 14.2 points on 43.0% from the field, 34.8% from three-point range, 71.7% from the free-throw line, along with 4.2 rebounds and 4.7 assists.

I just need Doc to be serious with our starting 5 after the ASB and start one of our shooting guards who can actually shoot on decent volume in that spot.

Even if that freak were playing with some dudes from the Y I think we'd have a reasonable shot at making the ECF.

Whether Kuzma or Porter Jr provide that we don’t know. But it’s plausible
What those four moves all had in common is that in all of them, we either gave up nothing (Stack and Lucas both street FAs) or actually gave up less than nothing, in the form of guys who were actively hurting us. You can definitely argue KPJ could work his way onto the list, since we traded him for a 3rd year guy we'd already declined the 4th year on, and since Jerry Stackhouse made the cut.
Kuzma's got a different standard he'd have to meet.

Don't forget George Hill. He was awesome & they were 1 shot away (at the end of 3 quarters) away from winning a championship.
Gave up nothing that was helping us that season, for him. Filler + a future low 1st. So there was no immediate cost, unlike the Kuzma deal. On paper it made us worse in the interim actually.
We didn't necessarily need anything beyond Giannis & Dame staying healthy though. It was the equation for NBA Cup. Maybe part of what the FO were thinking. Typically champions haven't done something significant at the deadline. Disrupts your chemistry.

In some ways the Kuzma trade can never be a "bad" trade because the deal was made because of the lack of confidence in Middleton being able to stay healthy. Even if Kuzma craps the bed in the playoffs, you will still see the argument made that they at least got something out of him while Middleton would've gotten injured.
I'd say unless he becomes a negative chemistry wise the KPJ trade can already be deemed a success. They would not have beaten Minnesota if it weren't for KPJ, that's not something you could've said about Marjon after any game this season.

Salmons showed out the year prior to FTD. He had it in him & there was none of the off the court issues.
Hopefully KP can put in his past as a person & change, regardless of anything else. But that's a major reason it's actually not necessarily more plausible.
+
On the court, Salmons was consistently doing his thing.
