Does Mac McClung belong in the NBA ?
Any time this subject is brought up you always get the same critiques. He’s too small, he can’t shoot, he can’t get past anybody, and he can’t defend. Given how little and sporadically he’s played in the NBA I don’t think any of the haters have actually watched him play, unless they’re the most hardcore NBA fans in the world
He’s 6’2 which is about the same size as most starting point guards. He played college ball at big conference school and was his team’s leading scorer his last 2 years. He shot slightly below average but you can get away with that when you’re by far the best athlete on the court. And calling him a bad defender is just a lazy stereotyped criticism.
When you’re the best athlete on the court and you’re motivated to defend then you’re going to be decent at it. It’s also kind of insulting to hear that criticism because we’re a far cry away from the NBA of 30 years when it was all about defense. There are lots of bad defenders today and everyone just accepts it. There’s even a ridiculous term called “2 way player” to emphasize when a guy is good at both offense and defense.
He’s played 70 minutes of NBA basketball and if you were to take those minutes and average them out over two games he’s putting up 16.5 ppg 7 rpg and 6 apg on .46% and .36% shooting. 2 years ago when he got to play 33 minutes in a single game he put up 20 points on 8/17 shooting and had 9 rebounds and 9 assists. I’m not saying he’s a future all star but there’s no way he isn’t at least a permanent 8th or 9th man in the NBA.

So why isn't he then? If the haters are wrong

Because not everything is black or white, there’s thing called the grey area, there’s also so many players that could choose to join this league & choose not to for any various of reasons.

A player like Cole Anthony is his best comp. Cole is a good spark plug off the bench. The difference is Cole is a way better shooter. Theres no shot in hell Mac can shoot like Cole.
It’s also the least valuable archetype. So no, he doesn’t belong.

I just dont think hes got enough going on between the ears (in terms of BBIQ) to be a true NBA level talent. Hes a crazy freak athlete, but hes not the first and wont be the last one from that talent pool that has potential but cant really put it together on the court. It takes a lot to be a professional basketball player.

I don't know but I hope he gets a real shot. I haven't seen him play but if he was the G League MVP, it doesn't mean he's gonna be a world beater but it probably means he can do more than just dunk.

No he's trash. Just because he can dunk doesn't make him a good player.

Reminds me of the Tim Tebow talk in the NFL...can kinda sorta do part of the job, but has a real issue convincing teams he can grow enough in other areas to be worth the developmental time to flesh the rest of his game out to not be exploited

He's shooting 40%FG and 25% from 3 in the G League as a 6'2 guard with 4.7ast vs 3.7to.
No, he does not belong in the NBA.

You just cannot understand the gap between G league and NBA. Collin Gillespie was throwing up triple doubles in G league and he cannot make rotation in Phoenix, same before in Denver. Guys like them are amazing basketball players. Just not good enough for NBA basketball.

Yeah, but he isnt just dunker, guy is literally G league MVP. I dont know his game, if hes in G league his whole career and still cant get an NBA job, he probably isnt NBA material, but I dont know, being G league MVP aint nothing, tho Euroleague MVP is not in the NBA either, and that league is little better to say the least.

The 20 points 20 minutes video is handle, speed and shooting not a single dunk

I really don't see why a team like the Wizards doesn't bring him in. He wouldn't be the worst player on their team I bet.

Remind me what tangible skill does he have that is sufficient for him to find a niche in the NBA?
Does anyone know who James White is? There is a reason why he didn’t make it in the NBA.

Probably not, but a shame james white (in his athletic prime) and DJ stephens didn't get the same opportunity to shine in the dunk contest when playing in the g league. I give props to mcclung for his execution, but it feels like a slap in the face to 2 of the best non-NBA dunk contest guys ever. My gripe sounds silly, but mcclung has benefited quite a bit financially from these dunk contests.
