Wait, how long ago? Why not just let him serve the suspension instead of his PTO?

So they're seemingly absolved for not trading him now. God, that really handcuffed us. You wonder if they do the Khris for Kuzma move otherwise. Trading Bobby was another way to get under the apron & Kuzma brought back a 4 replacement in his absence.

Still think Middleton/AJ for Kuzma was short-sighted. But I'm just wondering about the alternate timelines & how Bobby's indiscretion may have led us down this darkest one.

Yup, all the expert analysis here at the trade deadline without knowing the facts. 8-)
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

"We're finally gonna get the entire team together" the coach says, as he knows a suspension coming down for his 6th man.

The Middleton move is still indefensible, let alone attaching a high upside guy in AJ Magic. If you're trading Middleton, do it to a team who can use him this year for better value. But don't trade him. Run w/ Brook, Giannis, Sims, Prince, Khris as your frontcourt; until Bobby gets back before the playoffs. I'd prioritize keeping a core player over the apron.

And if they desperately wanted to get under they could have dealt Pat w/ a 2nd, Tyler Smith, even AJ Magic if you had to. Rival execs said 3 2nds, which they're probably over-selling as a negotiating tactic. But even if you take it at face value, you're giving them a high 2nd, high 2nd last year, late 1st last year. Gets it done, then some. I don't think it required AJ Magic.

They were seemingly moving on from Middleton before that because of the rumors, then may have panic switched to Kuzma cuz of Bobby's impending absence. Locked themselves into it. Like Horst's mentor Hammond when he traded for Tobes for Redick alone, after the rug was pulled out from under him in regards to Josh Smith, iirc.

I'm always going to believe that the org was sick of Middleton's unreliability and just wanted him gone.

Tramadol does help a lot of people, but each person has a different tolerance to different things.. That's all I meant. Just thought it was a strange thing for someone to get busted for.
it's always funny............... TILL I GET HURT!!!!

Judging by the deadline, teams were getting 2-3 picks for taking on the expiring equivalent of Pat's deal. Add in his extra season next year, the flexibility it removes from turning "nothing" into another $10 million on the books and I don't think it's really surprising nobody took us up on it. I'd also say that AJ and Tyler have surely depreciated since the draft. They really haven't shown anything, even if they were drafted on potential, and teams will almost always go for a pick over another teams "reclamation" project. I do agree that we probably targeted and went for Kuzma but I think the idea that it would have been easy to dump Pat might be a little questionable. It took us three seconds to dump the Hill/Ibaka/Nwora trio in the Crowder deal for instance. If Pat was expiring, I'd bet that there was something on the table, a couple C list prospects and a pick for a $20 million vet isn't exactly the easiest sell.

AJ Johnson did what was expected. He did improve plenty and show high upside flashes, even if he was never ready. That wasn't expected. And if you believe the Wizards, they had a late lotto grade on him.

Tyler Smith was a high 2nd, 33. Those are worth a lot more than random 2nds. I'd agree he depreciated somewhat w/ the g-league performance, but not below your average 2nd.

If you just go by what rival execs said themselves, which they'd have motive to over-sell, that package, or less gets it done. And I'd attach Trent if that's what it required over conceding Middleton.

But as others posited, and based on the rumors, they were motivated to move on from Middleton, and they erred in fixating on Kuzma, while not even involving a 3rd team like the Pistons who could have used Khris to give us better value.

My point is none of us know the facts. We speculate, and that's fine, that's what we're here for. But many blasted Horst for not trading Bobby and now we know why. And while we can criticize the Middleton trade, again we have no clue what deals were and were not on the table.

I don't need to know what else was on the table vis a vis Middleton. I don't make the deal when even this version was better than Kuzma, then we had to attach our 1st rd pick from last yr & a pick swap.

Fair enough. I'm glad we moved on from Middleton.

Correct. And that’s why I’m not taking at face value Bobby just accidentally took pills his buddy had. There is so much smoke here and no local journalist capable of unpacking it.
