He'll be fine but the pity party over the trade actually needs to end. What is supposed to be a revenge tour now feels like a baby shower with Luka as the expectant mother. Looking at his shape in February, Mavs weren't totally wrong. Mavs also weren't wrong to say slamming beers on a bum knee before a finals was madness. I don't think he did any conditioning during the break either. They say the league is soft but can't wait to baby players. These are teams on a roll pushing for playoff spots. He needs to get his head out. He will eventually but he shouldn't need to coming off a finals appearance where he should have been hungrier than ever.

There’s a nasty schism between Laker fans and LeBron fans brewing cause this trade was always gonna be straight up awful short term. Two heliocentric ballhog defensive traffic cones that would rather yap at the refs than even jog back was never gonna work in the short term. But you can’t not do that trade obviously so idk

The league will probably have to call it in and get back to the classic 20+ nightly free throw disparity to rectify this in the short term

You can play terribly and win against the Hornets, cause theyre the Hornets. A win is a win, but winning this game in the last few minutes against this squad still wouldnt feel great, especially after getting blown out by the Jazz.

Its not even like this was a great 1 in 20 game where the Hornets were firing on all cylinders and were playing like a great team. The Hornets were awful

The fact is, this team simply isn't properly built around Luka, which is understandable since it wasn't even a conceivable possibility until a few weeks ago. AD was their only big who should actually be getting rotation minutes in a playoff series, and now all their top four players are below average defenders at best. You do the trade 100 times out of 100 (I didn't think the previous team was going anywhere of note this season, let alone two or three years from now), but I don't know how much it does for them in the short term.

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure Rob will bungle the Luka era as well. He just gets to extend the clock for another couple of years while he can point to the legitimate challenges of reorienting the team around Luka.

I’m seeing a lot of “LeBron needs to give Luka the reigns like D Wade did in Miami” posts on social media. That may be a good idea if Luka wasn’t fat and out of shape right now, but there’s no doubt that LeBron is a better player than this version of Luka. LeBron sitting back so Luka can chuck more bricks and turn the ball over doesn’t help the Lakers win.

See, that works for Greg Popovich and Manu Ginobili. Even Phil Jackson had trouble selling Lamar Odom on a sixth man role. It would be very difficult for JJ, a first year head coach to go to a player absolutely rolling on a well below market value contract and ask for more sacrifice. That’s the kind of situation that sinks team morale.
