Ainge hasn't overplayed anything. Lauri and Kessler are still in Utah because Utah sees them as keepers going forward. Any assumptions otherwise on your part is just your poor understanding of the situation.

There is essentially no chance the Jazz can build a contending team while Markkanen is still a valuable player. Young players just take way too long to develop and the Jazz have no trade assets other than their pick this year, the Suns 2031 pick, and Kessler.

The latter part is a bit of a stretch. If the plan is to build through the draft (and I hope it is) I agree that keeping Lauri doesn't make a ton of sense. But Utah does, factually, have a ton of trade assets. We easily have the ability to put together a pick(s) based package that is as strong as any other team in the league w/exception to OKC + have enough picks left over to be competitive should another very good player become available. e.g., we could have easily exceeded the value that was paid for Fox this season while still having enough assets to get a similar or better player in the offseason. Not saying that is the direction we should go - I support trading Lauri for assets at this point and just lean into the rebuild since we just have guys that look like future role-players (and some likely not even that).

While the Jazz have picks (though almost no high upside picks), the big downside for them as a buyer is that they have essentially zero high upside young players.

Walker Kessler is a league average starting center and Hendricks has the chance to be a league average starting PF one day, but the other five young guys just don't have the physical tools (or the shooting in Collier's case) to probably be more than bench players. Hendricks' trade value is also badly diminished by his broken leg.

If the Cavs or Thunder flame out, they could offer Jarrett Allen or Darius Garland or Jalen Williams for a star. The Spurs could offer Castle and picks for a star. The Rockets could offer Sengun and picks and maybe give a second draft opportunity for struggling top 3 picks like Jabari Smith or Reed Sheppard. The 76ers have Jared McCain if they double down further... It's going to be hard for the Jazz to compete if high value players become available on the trade market unless they're trading their own pick (which they should absolutely not do)

Spurs shouldn't taget someone like John Collins at all, other than maybe if the Jazz wanted to move from him for really cheap. With this Wemby news, while I'm hopeful he'll make a full recovery as stated, I would absolutely NOT make any moves that compromise Spurs future picks until there's certainty about his situation (he's back on the court playing at his best and there's no doubt his issue is a one time thing).

I worry about Lauri after this season, playing losing basketball for multiple seasons can develop bad habits

Nah, he's a good vet, one tank season isn't going to spoil him. The real risk is what multiple tanking seasons could do to his trade value. If the Jazz land Flagg they could pivot immediately, otherwise they probably should cash in on Lauri at the first good offer they get, before he loses more value.

This is arguably his third tank season considering they dumped vets and got actively worse the two seasons previous to this one
