Tatum is unfairly disrespected

Post#1 » by birdsmoke » Mon Feb 24, 2025 6:28 am

This might be my first thread. Don't crucify me if it's been done to death. Watching Tatum tonight, and frankly the whole team, I realized how much we have to be thankful for. There is always room for improvement, but our guys, and particularly JT are/is really special, and should be appreciated. That's it.

Yeah JT is really amazing. Disrespected though? I mean are you talking about internet randos or here on realgm? On the general board? He has made 3 straight all NBA 1st teams and among the top in jersey sales, and doing just fine with endorsements. I don’t think he is disrespected by any means by the media or fans. I think you could make a case that he is by some realgm posters.
I think most people though have him as a top 5-6 player and recognize his consistent availability pushes him higher.

I think yes, generally by NBA media. I’m not discrediting Jaylen’s defensive impact in the finals or his shot in G1 of the ECF but I do think voters made Tatum the only guy (in a category with like LeBron and other greats) to not win Finals MVP after leading in all major categories just because they wanted to not give it to him.

I think the great thing is that Tatum seems to have developed the right mindset to not care/use it as fuel to win and get better.

When the votes are tallied he's not, but as a talking point on air and in articles I feel he is disrespected by NBA media. Fans are a similar take as he obviously sells jerseys, but Twitter and all that is full of JT haters and not just his game either. So many call him corny and can't stand his personality. They also slurp up SGA trying so hard to have "aura" and Ant overall just being a clown who talks too much so it's whatever.

Agree with the OP. Tatum is variously referred to as a choker and a chucker by a number of Celtics fans. There's a lot of people who set ridiculously high expectations on him and are quick to cut him down if he doesn't reach their unrealistic standards. If people want to take a pot shot at him they just compare his three point shooting to Steph Curry and conveniently ignore every other aspect of his game.

Every year JT has built on and improved his game. He's now a threat with the ball in every conceivable way. The type of player every coach would love to build around. Hopefully he stays injury free and we get another 10 seasons of this elite player.

It’s hard for me to call him disrespected when he is well on his way to his 4th straight All NBA first team, but I thought it was really odd that JB won both ECF MVP and FMVP. The narrative during the playoffs was odd. Despite issues with efficiency, Tatum still led in all counting stat categories by a solid margin + the gravity factor.

He's probably been the second-best Celtic since Bird (the first IMO being KG) and an unimpeachable citizen on and off the court to boot. Every GM would gladly offer their left nut plus their firstborn to acquire him. And he's lead this team to a championship (to be continued).

He has nothing to worry about. Just keep being him and doing what he's doing.

He really is very level-headed, both on and off the Court. Gotta attribute that to his Mom.

Steve Kerr blatantly disrespected JT in the Olympics.

The rest of the field, NBA players, coaches, analysts, fans, and media, I don't think so.

JT is on his way to his 4th 1st Team All-NBA and was voted as a starter on the East All-Stars, so that's recognition right there.

I think it's just a case of superstar purgatory.

What I mean by that is JT is not a young an up and coming star player anymore and he's not yet on the OGs side of Lebron, KD, and Steph.

JT is somewhere in between.

I'm lower on JT than most fans here but it only takes a 5 minute stroll to the General Board to figure out he's definitely one of the most unreasonably hated on players of his generation.

Not even close to what Paul Pierce experienced during his career.

Pierce never made 1st Team All-NBA and was never voted an All-Star starter.

Any and all great Celtics player will never get the full respect they deserve just because they play in green. And that doesn't include KG because he came from somewhere else and already had that respect.

Disrespected by the officials
He is the most harassed, mauled and physically played player in the league by far. The opposite - he gets Ts for complaining (the most in the NBA)
When he'll get the Lebron, Curry, SGA, Luka and even Brunson's calls we will know he is respected

In the mean time - get more Rings . This will shut up all the naysayers

As a Celtics fan - I am sure glad we have him
