Kanon Catchings - BYU

Post#1 » by RipCity71252 » Tue Feb 25, 2025 6:14 pm

I'd be surprised if Kanon doesn't draw serious first round interest if he decides to test the waters.

6 BPM in conference play
9.5 BPM vs top 50 (9 OBPM)

Very rare blend of size, fluidity, athleticism and three-point shooting. And although he's really just been in there to bomb threes, I've been pretty impressed with his comfortability with the ball. Shown some nice connective passing and has flashed some real off the dribble chops when he's had the chance to. Really has me intrigued at how high his offensive ceiling is moving forward.

Comparing him to a guy like Carter Bryant, they are very close to me. I think you feel a little safer with Bryant since the defense is more bankable, but the offensive upside with Catchings has me a little more excited about his tail end outcomes.

I honestly didn't even realize he was a prospect but his size definitely stands out. You're right though - BYU really only asks him to shoot 3's from the corner. He doesn't have much of a role on the team.

I've had him in the (LATE) first round all year, but it is mainly because I haven't watched enough basketball to have a good mock haha! Big wings who can shoot always have value - he may not ever develop any of the ancillary skills, but Wes Johnson had a long career as the worst version of that archetype, so if he enters the draft I'm sure he will be at least picked in the first half of the second round. I do like him, though.

BPM really does go crazy inflating for the top tier teams with toughest schedules huh?

I watched a few BYU games earlier in the year, mostly to watch Egor but came away far more impressed with Kanon. He's the type of guy I would love for the Kings to draft.

Egor is overrated. Hes turnover prone and he can’t shoot.

kinda reminds me of Keegan. He chose the worst school to go to unfortunately. He'd be starting and a sure-fire 1st rounder if he chose differently. There's games he barely plays or touches the ball. I think the coach is hoping he'll return and I often wonder if they intentionally hurt draft stock selfishly.

definitely not hurting his draft stock intentionally. kevin young's entire sales pitch is that he will develop and get them to the league. he needs to put guys in the league and improve their stock if wants any credibility in recruiting.

he doesn't play because he doesn't rebound at all, struggles to create for himself or teammates (he's an abysmal passer at this stage) and despite being a respectable 3pt shooter, every wing on the team is a better 3pt shooter than he is.

from an nba prospect standpoint, only shoots 59% FTs which a concern moving forward for his ability to hit long jumpers. and honestly, if he's not hitting from the outside, he brings very little else to the table.
