Yeah this is an underappreciated point for Denver. Even if KD doesn't work out, they get a get out of jail free card on the MPJ and Nnaji contracts and can properly re-tool around Joker/Murray/Gordon.

MPJ was viewed as a negative contract because of the health risk; however, last year he played 81 games and this year he has played 55 of 58 games.
How is MPJ a negative contract?
He is owed
2026: $38M
2027: $41M ($12M Guaranteed)

He is a 6'10" forward providing 19/7 shooting 41% from 3pt land. I would argue there is nothing negative about his contract any more. i would have agreed this was a terrible contract if this was 2023.

I think his contract is more neutral than terrible TBH. He's a good complimentary player, but in the apron era it's hard to justify paying your 4th most important player $40M a year when your top 3 guys are also making large salaries. Especially when you have the depth/tax issues that Denver does.

He's not worth that if healthy, imo. I didn't realize 2027 was only 12M guaranteed. I'd still do it as Denver.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

2027 was originally only 12 mill guaranteed, but it became fully guaranteed once the Nuggets won the championship.
