It’s easy to cherry pick some stats for a handful of players. If you aren’t seeing rotation players in Shead, Mogbo and Walter I don’t know what to tell you. All 3 are positive defenders with offensive upside. Maybe you don’t watch the games?
Walter -1 DBPM
Shead -1.4 DBPM
Mogbo 0.9 dBPM
I watch games but maybe you fixate on a few possessions where they make a few defensive plays. Toronto loses their games when these bench guys come in. They have had a lot of mins that other teams barely give rookies.
I also would like to point out that even if they end up positive defenders you still need to shoot the ball well in the NBA. You end up like Orlando if you can't outscore another bench.
Raps need contributing two way role players next season because any injuries to the key guys means these bench guys need to produce.
Those "bad numbers" are with guys not playing optimally. We're trying to see what else they can do.
While other rookies are playing into more specific roles.
If we actually tried to play optimally this past year, we're probably 8th.
I am not a big hypothetical person but sure, you can say that especially if Ingram played. It was a really easy schedule for the last half too.
For me, role players who contribute don't have functional deficiencies. All these guys are undersized for their ideal roles.
Mogbo has zero bag and shooting so he realistically his ideal role is center and he is way too light and ineffective against size. I don't know how that changes next year.
Shead is 6 feet. He is on the short side. To have a good POA you should have some bulk, and wingspan at least like Pat Beverley. Also Shead is always going to be an inefficient scorer like FVV because of below average finishing skills that relate to his size/athleticism.
Walter has okay size and sporadic shooting skill, but I think he is severely underweight. Wings need to be 210 pounds at least otherwise the odds are you are going to get hurt or you give up top much on defense. He has a chance at least to being special.
What this bench needs is an old soul in a young body. Yes, they can get a Noa Essengue and reach for the stars, but I think they need someone they can trust to anchor the team like CMB or Sorber. They are big and strong and know how to defend and move the ball. Not sexy but fill the bench out. Labaron Philon with the second pick is ideal as I think he can offer better two way play at PG.
