I think these scenarios about getting our picks back from HOU (or the Wiz, for that matter) are a daydream. If I'm a Rockets fan, I'd want to keep the picks. Wouldn't you?
It's been obvious for decades that the best way to build a team is to stockpile draft picks and do your best to roll them forward so you're always bringing in the best young talent at the lowest possible cost. I was shocked that front offices didn't take this approach earlier - but now, it seems to have caught on, with the Thunder, Rockets and Jazz leading the way, with the Spurs positioned to follow.
First came analytics as applied to play style and teambuilding. Now, I think the day has truly arrived as front offices embrace the obvious solution to the problem of avoiding the boom-bust cycle of team building. Sadly, we can't truly join that party for another 6 years.
Is it a silver lining that Ishbia really *can't* tank? Might as well work hard to develop talent that could eventually be valuable in trade if our ceiling is the play-in. Least wasteful way to waste our time, I guess?
