Luka must feel like he dodged a bullet to be honest, lol...would suck carrying this Dallas team without Kyrie for the next 9-10 months.

Sucks for Dallas fans, this must be one of the worst months ever experienced by a sports franchise...trading away their best player and generational superstar for scraps, their new all-star getting hurt on game 1 and their top scorer tearing his ACL...Jesus...
If Luka was back, I doubt Kyrie would have gotten hurt.
The load was heavier on him to do more which causes stress on the body, which typically leads to fatigue or injury

Not 1 but 2. Kyrie won't play next year.

Not sure if it's true, but I read they are trying to move the team anyways. So lack of team support would help their case.

Philly with two of the worst contracts in the league, the future is bleak.
PHX also doesn't have a lot of future assets with the other worst contracts, need to break their core.
Dallas that traded their fan favorite young cornerstone stud for a short contention window that is gone now, also few future assets.

Great question and it deserve a thread but I think this is Mavs 1,suns 2 and 76ers 3

At least the 76ers can hope for a miracle next season(even if the chances are very slim). Not the case for the suns and mavs for the same reason

Still think Philly is worse. They are screwed for the next 4 years between what they are paying Embiid and PG, both of whom are washed and have untradable contracts.

Anyway to keep this on point, hope Irving can make a fully recovery and play at a high level when he returns.

Mavs had insanely good future ahead. Core of PJ, Lively, Luka... Gafford and Grimes (if extended). That's already a very good front court. Kyrie was still an all star.. Young promising guys in BWill and OMax, on top of some good veterans to help out.

Now they need to sign 10-day and two-way contracts just to survive game to game. And all of that happened in just 1 week !!!!

I think Philly is 3rd because at least they have the first round draft pick for the next several season I believe after this year...Not the case for Dallas from 2027 to 2030 and of course the suns

This injury wouldn't happen in timeline with Luka in Mavs.

The basketball gods haven’t been so kind to Dallas after they went out of their way to send Doncic out.

Oh I see this angle is going to start getting a push from the media, it’s not exactly wrong.

I remember this exact same thing of crazy high minutes occurred right before Kobe tore his Achilles. The huge minutes he was playing to try to get the lakers in the playoffs became the headline.

I remember that for Kobe....He was playing like 45 minutes per game for 2-3 week and the lakers were a fast pace team at that time under Mike D'Antoni too, like top 5 in pace....It was the only reason why Kobe tore his achilles

Yeah I remember this. Kobe was dragging that team to the playoffs and the coach was wearing him down to nothing and he hurt himself. I'll never forgive him for that.

Ownership caused this by not hiring Phil Jackson who could say no to Kobe.
Shane Battier on Kobe: "I always seem to end up on Kobe Island at some point or another, all expense paid."

God damn, I hate this for him and Dallas fans.

As a Boston guy, I've been fond of his personal growth since in Dallas and he really became a likable guy again.

I'm glad he still has a player option out there so he's not put in an unfortunate spot contractually. Maybe a good opportunity to come to the table with favorable extension terms for both.

I feel for Mavs fans. This entire ordeal is giving ‘curse of the Bambino’ vibes.

They are 6 and 7 since the trade with a -5 MOV. Davis played 1/2 game and might be out for the year. Kyrie suffered an injury that is usually a career ender.

That trade is shaping up to be even worse than all of us thought at the time. Good god.

**** hell man what is this season for dallas.

Not only Kyrie being out for the season. The fact that they will have to be tortured by watching Dimwiddie get hefty minutes as a PG is awful on top of the horrendous.

Get well soon Kyrie it's always a damn pleasure watching you play.

I hate to shift this, but does this give Nico more time? This kind of feels like something you could use as a time buying scenario like “hey we coulda contended with AD and Kyrie, it’s not our fault they got hurt”

I don't think so because Kyrie is turning 33 in March and is already very injury prone and AD is turning 32 in March and is also very injury prone.

Maybe relying on two injury prone players that are already in their 30s is not a very good idea.

Dallas fans may have been able to stomach trading Luka if they got a a couple young rising prospects and a treasure trove of 1st round picks, but all they got was AD.

I'm with you. If I was a Mavericks I would have hated the trade, as almost all Mavs fans did. Any my attitude would have been "you made a trade for a title now so give me the title."

The team imploding within a month due to injuries would make me more angry.

Djoker wrote:I know it won't make Mavs fans feel any better but IMO this Kyrie injury would completely derail them even if Luka wasn't traded. With Kyrie out this year and possibly all of next year too, the Mavs aren't making any noise in the playoffs. What are the odds that Luka would even re-sign in 2026? I'd say slim to none. We also don't know this publicly but I'm pretty close to 100% sure that Luka was traded in the first place because he told the organization that he's leaving next year and they wanted to get something for him.

No way Luka would leave the mavs because of the supermax contract.....Even Giannis stay with the bucks because of the supermax contract in 2020

The supermax contract is like 110 millions more that a normal max contact if he was to leave Dallas from free agency. No way it would happens....

We don't know for sure but I think he would leave. He already has a lot of money plus he can make a **** of money from endorsements in LA anyways.

Giannis stayed because the Bucks were a contender. The current Mavs especially given this Kyrie Injury are just not. Different situations.

I’m tired of this gaslighting from people like you. There is no justification for the Luka trade no matter how many ludicrous scenarios you posit. Luka wasn’t going anywhere and the Maverick were legit contenders as long as he was there, period, end of discussion.

picc wrote:Yeah this likely doesnt happen if Luka isnt traded. Kai isnt playing the big minutes he was playing, he isnt carrying the load he was carrying, and of course he wouldnt be in the same position, purely geographically, as he was in to get hurt if the team was that different.

Could he still have got hurt sometime? Sure. But he factually wouldnt have been in the same position to get hurt as he was last night.

Its not a coincidence this happened soon after a trade that made him a high minute primary ballhandler.

I feel so bad for Mavs fans. I dont know any restaurant in Dallas even allows Nico Harrison to eat there. If I was head chef i’d walk up to the table and wipe his dishware off the table like an 80s movie finance CEO clearing his desk to bang the secretary. That guy should be run out of the city.

But the worst part is that he prob wouldnt care. I dont think he cares about basketball or the Mavs, or their fans. He’s just a businessman at the end of the day.

Yup, just to add Cuban deserves a lot of blame here. He was the one who promoted Nico to the GM role and he built the current Mavs basketball management team.

It isn't a valid excuse for him to say "if I was there the trade wouldn't have happened." A good leader is responsible for ensuring an organization can function after they leave. He failed at that task.

They would just trade him in his prime for a suspect return after leading them to the Finals.
