Re: Kerr on Traveling
Given how strong shooting now is in the NBA, the NBA needs to tighten up ball handling/screening rules or accept that games with finals like 142-133 will be the norm in 10 yrs.

It’s more baffling to me when they actually do call a travel because then the reaction is: “Ok yes that was a travel. But that also happens on every single play, so why did you only call that one?”

I know he stressed footwork but I’m going to continue to complain about carrying as the real issue. Letting the ball rest on your hand for half a second gives a tremendous advantage to the offensive player, and is the real reason why 80% of the league is a ball handling threat in the modern NBA, compared to like 30% in the 80’s/90’s and 60% in the 00’s/early 10’s when carrying started to get bad.
I mostly blame and1 and Allen Iverson for this, but I get why the league has allowed it, it’s popular.

During all-star week, I always watch college hoops. And the one thing I love about college hoops relative to the pros is how strict they are at enforcing moving screens.
The Draymond screen just isn't allowed. And the NBA would be a lot better if it enforced the rule.
A lot of older fans lament the elimination of hand checking. I do not. But non-enforcement of moving screens was a change that occured in my lifetime and is the one I hate. That and the defensive 3 second rule cripples NBA defenses.
Briefly on Kerr, he's a total hypocrite but all coaches are. Levon's subtext is right. Kerr ignores moving screens because it is a foundational element of his offense. But that's true of almost all coaches. Riley decried Bad Boys basketball and then became its strongest proponent in NY and Miami.Jackson attacked Shaq for offensive fouling in Chicago but kept quiet in LA. All coaches are hypocrites.

It is popular watching extreme ball handling but on the flipside interests in games has declined with its rise.
Now most of that is ratings are hemorraging everywhere. But I do think it is partly due to how offensive centric the modern game is. When you watch NBA games now it just feels like every possession ends in points or at least easy entrance into the lane. And that can make watching a full game dull.
So the NBA faces a tough dance here. Allowing this style of play is popular with fans but once it reached the point that every player could do it you get a monotonous game.

Because that's not actually happening. Guys are putting enough force on the ball that they're very slowly stopping it while they can move the top of their hand. Carrying would mean their hand is actually holding the ball. I haven't the foggiest idea how a ref can consistently tell the difference in real time. But one is legal and the other isn't. And this is very much taught by dribbling coaches.

Totally agree-I LOVE playing defense and this drives me crazy. A guy puts his hand under the ball, you move up to crowd the shot or pass. Then, he puts it back down and gets by you.
I actually stop play, and make them check it up. It's a HUGE advantage that makes defense too tough. I think Garland and Ja are the worst of today's players, but it's a huge percentage of ball handlers who do it

Moving screens are my biggest gripe if I had any with the modern game. I'm all for getting the dribbling rules right and consistent. But what Kerr is talking about is a few calls a game. Not what many want which is the game to go back to looking like the 70's.

its part of the overall trend of offensive players being able to just club the living hell out of defenders in todays game. defense is less physical than ever, but offensive players have NEVER in the history of the sport been allowed to get as aggressive with defenders as they are now. guys like freak JT harden embiid could not do many of the moves that are fundamental to their moveset in 1992.

Just couldn't disagree more. I see more physical play on the outside by BOTH offensive and defensive guys now. Both sides are grabbing and holding as people move off ball. And an offensive player in the post might as well have a punch me sign on their back. Through most of NBA history, the games were less physical. Some of the shooting fouls I've seen from the 70's and 80's just looked like ghost fouls until they'd show a replay and show the most subtle little touch.

What do you mean by in 10 years?
Feels like it’s pretty dang normal already.
