Excellent, where are you guys looking to move? I have been following the ExPat movement for years, even before Trump.

We've looked at a number of places but right now we're focusing on Panama.

Specifically a community by the name of Coronado.

It's popular with expats.

The expat game is a real chess match because you have people around the globe participating in the same scramble, everyone is trying to get in on the ground floor for the next Lisbon, Costa Rica, or whatever. My GF is from Spain and I hope to at-least to be able to divide time between the two countries, best wishes on the search in Coronado.

So was the price of eggs a justifiable reason for switching allegiances to Russia and other authoritarian countries?
Or do you believe that the US was being taken advantage of by UKR and Golfy just wants peace? Please explain.

With Trump as president, these are unusual times. For me, he is the embodiment of evil. There hasn’t been anyone like him before. There used to room for civilized discussion. How do you talk to someone you believe supports evil? I doubt there can be useful discussions here between Trump supporters and the other side.

From the time he first declared his candidacy, Golfy
has routinely eschewed substantive debate or discussion.

Instead, he uses non substantive insults to 'win'
debates. So his supporters don't have much
principle to stand on when it comes to making
their arguments. That and his consistent tendency
to claim his opponents are citing so called fake news
has killed whatever semblance of civilized debate
we may have once enjoyed. The internet is rife with
websites that will claim anything such as it is UKR's
fault that Russia invaded them.

doclinkin wrote:Meh. I consistently welcome opposing opinions and learn a great deal from this thread -- yourself, da1andonly, a few others --and even when I disagree it forces me to do the research and come back with receipts. I agree there are pointless insults flung about, but don't beat up monte about it since the tone was established in this thread by pine early on that we allow for a bit more rough and tumble conversation here than in other threads. We are going to disagree, sometimes heatedly, about things that actually matter. Basketball pretty much doesn't, unless you're in the sports industry. I personally find it somewhat absurd that people who support a party and particularly a president, who regularly breaks the norms of polite discourse, get their actual feelings hurt when they bump into an off color word. Still, I think it doesn't help the debate, just shuts it off. I'd rather fight it out. But then I'm the guy who started the insults and trolling thread.

As for the value of the thread. Personally I appreciate the insiders look at the local industry. There are plenty of ways to distract ourselves with the 'bread and circus' of sports etc, but few places where you can hear from people who are a couple degrees of separation away from decision makers. I have dozens of other interests, writing, art, etc, that draw my time, especially since I seem to need less sleep than most people, but come back here because of the brainy discourse, whether on sports or policy. Seems dumb to read the thread and then say you don't think you should have read it. Shrug.

So. Seems similarly silly to pop in and ask for people to cordially invite you back, then drop an insult on your way out the door. Doesn't really add anything to the conversation. If you have information or an opinion, bring it here. Just don't expect people to always be measured or reasonable in the back and forth. People are pissed. An unelected un vetted trillionaire with red flag conflicts of interests has appointed himself a super cabinet member, without oversight check or balance and is dismantling the concept of governance. If anybody wants to step in here to defend that with facts and links and citations, I'd love to hear it. But don't flinch and be a pantswetter if someone loudly disagrees with you. Just come back with better facts. Or even, maybe, listen and be convinced. Or hell, admit when your party got it wrong. And be willing to do something to fix it.

I appreciate the post but I have no desire to reenter the thread. In fact I'm certain I won't. But highly partisan and personal attacks like "you're a piece of sh$t, and a liar and evil" might dissuade others with differing viewpoints from participating.

Trump has:

- Paused all federal grants and loans, blocked by courts.
- Froze federal hiring without a plan
- Fired probationary workers without a plan
- Mandated return to office without a plan
- Mandated the US build an iron dome, even though it's not a priority for US defense
- Eliminated DEI programs and hiring, the bulk of which facilitated veteran preference in hiring
- Declared immigration as a national emergency without justification to use emergency powers (reserved for war and natural disasters) such as deploying National Guard and military
- Pushed for elimination of birthright citizenship
- Declared hispanic gangs specifically as terrorist organizations (not Eastern Europe or Asian Gangs) so he can justify using authority against hispanics specifically
- Declared previously legal pathways to citizenship, the "right way" of as many conservatives say they're ok with immigration, as illegal, including refugee and asylum. The "right way" used to include 5 ways: marriage birthright, employment, "special immigrant," and refugee/asylum. He has attempted to eliminate three of them, leaving only marriage and employment. Employment is reserved for immigrants of extraordinary ability and skill. "Special" immigrant were largely used by Afghani translators, clergy, and other specific use cases.
- Implemented tariffs that will increase consumer spending
- Dismantled CFPB, which protects consumer interests
- Pulled out of the Paris Climate Accords
- Ended Green New Deal, which included investments for energy sector jobs
- Withdrew from the World Health Organization
- Declared an Energy Emergency without justification so he can more easily deploy federal funds to purchase energy (funnel money) to energy companies
- Pardoned Jan 6 rioters
- Commuted Oath Keepers and Proud Boys who committed hate crimes outside of Jan 6
- Pardoned the creator of Silk Road, the infamous dark web site where you were able to purchase drugs, weapons, and trafficked humans, from his life sentence.

and this doesn't even get into the international destabilization he's causing in the Middle East, Ukraine, and China. Or DOGE. Or cutting Medicare/Medicaid. Or mass-firing 1300 CDC employees. Or mass-firing 800 NOAA employees. Or the firing of essential nuclear arsenal employees that was later rescinded. Or firing essential Department of Ag scientists working on avian flu research that was later rescinded. Or the self-dealing from crypto. or his uniquely unqualified cabinet members. Or making himself the board chair of the Kennedy Center. Or Elon and Bannon seig heiling on camera. Or quietly removing the ban of Trump Org refraining from doing business oversees during his second term. Or repealing the ethics rules that prohibited executive branch employees from receiving gifts from lobbyits, or the ethics rule prohibiting executive branch employees from hiring lobbyists, or waiving conflict of interest requirements for executive branch employees.

GDP for Q1 2025 is expected to drop 2.8%. The US GDP hasn't dropped since Covid, and before that it was the 2008 recession. The GDP growth for Q4 2024 was +2.3%, and the cause of the 5% swing is being attributed to a decrease in investment and imports, direct effects of Trump's tariffs.

There are dozens of posts like this where people have tried to engage with you substantively but you only remember the namecalling ones, so maybe be more selective in your takeaways.

Popper I actually enjoy hearing from conservatives mostly because it’s exhausting only hearing how terrible Trump is. I like to read some good news once in a while. I’d love to hear from you or Nate.

I am a RE dev here in DC and really hope his layoffs don’t crash the market. But so far he and Elon in particular seem like a bull in a china shop.

I mean the whole DOGE thing is a joke. They’ve pretty much had to walk back all their claims because they’re wrong and don’t know what they’re doing.

The DOJ cannot respond to all the lawsuits from fired Feds because they gutted the DOJ, the one and only thing Elon/Trump want to accomplish besides destroying all of government, is to get that huge tax cut through, then in the future they will say “oh shoot, we have to cut Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid benefits because darn, we don’t have the money for it” PHUCK these people.

Oh, and the MAGA base will gladly vote Red again when they prop up the next social issue boogeyman. :curse:

I'll add the messages I've been receiving from a group chain that I've been added to recently mostly to for meet ups but now the group has ventured into politics and are posting stuff that I generally disagree with.

- "It is good for the government to eliminate of Education because student loans are bad. This is causing higher education to be more expensive that it otherwise would be. Therefore DOGE eliminating the department would be justified."

- "I am agnostic on the inflationary effects of tariffs" "

- One person is using Jordan Peterson (a youtube personality that I have never heard of ) and economist Frierich Hayek.

I'll outsource all my arguments to you guys and use my limited brain sources to imagine how many championships a team with Gilbert Arenas, Chris Webber, Bradley Beal, and Laron Profit would get.

Sent to me by several friends

On Tuesday, March 4th, we are going to present THE STATE OF OUR UNION. We will go live at 7pm Eastern (which is 6pm Central) and will go to midnight or 1am. We will break this up into 30-minute blocks. We will have Congressional Black Caucus members, civil rights activists, voting rights advocates, labor leaders, business leaders, grassroots activists and millennials.  We will NOT carry Donald Trump’s speech. Instead, when Trump walks to the mic, we will go live to New Haven, Connecticut, where Rev. William J. Barber II will deliver OUR speech. My team will show clips of the twice-impeached, criminally convicted felon-in-chief, and we’l discuss these matters after Barber is done. Spread the word! TO KEEP TRUMP’S RATINGS LOW, DO NOT WATCH ANY NEWS NETWORKS.  I would love to have 100,000+ watching us LIVE at Youtube.com/RolandSMartin or on the Black Star Network (BSN) app.  Again, please help spread the word by sharing this with your network (family, friends, church, neighbors, co-workers, classmates, etc.).
Thank you.

Not sure if this latest ruling just narrowly overcoming the CONservative SCOTUS majority is something to cheer about or to dread given that it took Amy Barrett voting in favor of upholding the separation of power.

“Does a single district-court judge who likely lacks jurisdiction have the unchecked power to compel the Government of the United States to pay out (and probably lose forever) 2 billion taxpayer dollars? The answer to that question should be an emphatic ‘No,’ but a majority of this Court apparently thinks otherwise. I am stunned,” wrote Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr.

What a bunch of weirdos.

What exactly does "government" mean exactly according to them?

Apparently it does not include the legislative branch and it almost certainly doesn't appear as if they believe that it is their job to hold a leader with dictatorship ambitions to account.

Is it POTUS or KOTUS, and how do you square "constitutional originalism" with viewing this republic as a constitutional monarchy?

This isn't even the final opinion.

- District court judge takes the case.
- District court judge issues a TEMPORARY restraining order on the fedgov's freezing of USAID funds during the pendency of litigation to tackle the larger question of whether the president can unilaterally refuse to spend money appropriated by Congress (he can't). This includes Fedgov paying out money owed for work completed, not even resuming regular operations.
- Fedgov ignores court order to pay out money owed for work completed
- District Court gets pissed and orders Fedgov to make payment JUST for work completed, not even the portion for regular operations
- Fed Gov appeals to SCOTUS
- SCOTUS, 5-4, says "yeah, you need to pay out money owed for work completed."
- Alito says "I am stunned."

It's an insane thing to say that the federal government is going to "lose forever" the $2B owed for services rendered.

he (or more likely Gorsuch) makes a technical point that TRO is supposed to only offer temporary relief, not final relief, but fails to distinguish that the TRO is RESTRAINING the federal government from FREEZING funds.

Put another way, if the court issues a TRO on the fedgov firing employees without cause, those employees would remain on payroll and the fedgov would similarly be "losing forever" the money contained in those paychecks. It doesn't invalidate the TRO.

Fedgov (and Alito) argues that sovereign immunity shields the fedgov from its obligation to make payments on money owed FOR SERVICES ALREADY RENDERED. That is an opinion straight from Trump's playbook as a private citizen, except now between sovereign immunity and presidential immunity, he is fully empowered and emboldened to stiff contractors.
