That seems to be the consensus among the NFL media types I follow online. The Bears did this b/c the FA options aren't great, particularly after Smith got tagged. Planning on addressing all 3 OL vacancies via the draft was unrealistic, increasing the need to trade for someone.

Just watch an instagram video of someone random fan saying that Jackson’s contract is 12m against the cap this year and this is his last fully guaranteed year so we can cut him whenever, if we choose. I did not verify this info, but if accurate, makes the deal a lot better for us.

maybe the best part of the jackson acquisition is that it reduces the odds of us handing out an albatross contract in free agency. i don't like paying him $17.5 million for one year, but it beats paying aaron banks $15m a year for 4 years

Saints just released Jamal Williams. He had great success under Johnson in Detroit and is one of the better short yardage guys in the nfl. He’d be a great pick up as a RB3.

At some point, the Bears have to put good players on the field.

How does Greg Gabriel still have a job? And more importantly why is anyone listening to him or sharing his opinion as if it has any merit?

He’s retired. His opinion has at least as much merit as anyone on RealGM for obvious reasons, is often still a professional consultant according to him. No fan of Gabriel, but instead of reflexively attacking him or me, maybe disagree with what’s being said, or not. Personally, I had no idea the Jackson guy existed. I just know the parade of stiffs the Bears have run up and through here recently, and I hope it stops. The Rams cut bait, and the Bears rehooked. We shall see.

This is almost certainly a move heavily endorsed by our new HC. If you think it's another stinky move made to fix the O line, then you're saying you have no confidence in Ben Johnson. They are only on the hook for one year. And I'll mention that the Bears did bring a "good player" in a few years ago, in Montez Sweat, and many people still complain about that, because we gave up a draft pick to do it. So which is it???

Per PFF, via Harrison Graham, expected cost for Dalman is 4/56, with 30 guaranteed. Seems doable. That would lockdown two IOL spots, and we certainly could get the third with our second round pick. Would give us a lot of flexibility at 10.

they'd have been miles better off paying some older guy much less money and keeping the effing pick

He was a Pro Bowler with Ben Johnson in Det. So it’s possible Ben made the call for familiarity and he’s good in the run game.

hope ben has a better handle on that familiarity than waldron did w/ everett

I'm still holding out hope that we can sign Tevin Jenkins as a "6th Man" for the O Line to back up the starters. I think someone is going to be willing to pay him to start though.

of course they will. he's better than his replacement!

Not sure I like Fowler mitigating the potential downside of it financially, because if it doesn’t work, the Bears have bigger problems. But to that, the Jackson acquisition does point to the Bears opinion of the free agent options out there. Not necessarily impressed. And Spiegs makes a good point about BJ getting a veteran to help implement what Ben is teaching. And not just teaching others, having someone that can actually do what Ben teaches helps. My view of what the move says about the draft, there isn’t much of any commitment to the Bears O-line as currently constructed other than Darnell Wright probably. At least to the longer term outlook. So far, the Bears have not accomplished flexibility to go BPA in the first round yet. No change, and assuming Jackson is the LG, they still need someone to play the right side, and Membou would be the favorite for me at this time.

Tevin gets to go into job interviews saying, ‘Hey, I played more games last year than my replacement’. But that’s not the flex he would think it is. But seriously, I am not against reasonably resigning Tevin to go back to RG, and draft a stud EDGE in the FR. The Bears aren’t necessarily getting anything better than Tevin by overpaying someone else.

Hopefully Dennis Allen gets something out of Noah Sewell. I was always curious about him. Jack must not be a fit. And linebacker in the draft seems possible. Hard to guess on free agency. Allen likes downhill guys from what I understand.

It seems like the Bears bailed them out. The boss move is waiting for him to be cut, then added. It’s not like the Bears didn’t have other options and avenues. I imagine Ben Johnson wanted him, and Poles delivered, Poles not real smooth about it though. Cunningham must be at home, sick.

I presume that they’ll also be pursuing a move like that. They have a lot of holes to fill and I understand the desire to get some certainty given the paltry draft capital that was given up. Most 6ths aren’t going to end up contributing.

That likely requires a greater financial commitment than they just made.
