This is phrased all wrong.

Releasing Darius Slay creates about $22.7 million in dead cap.

None of that is "saved" by the post June-1 designation. It only means some of the dead cap (roughly $9.4 million) is applied in 2025, while the rest comes in 2026.

Since his pre-release 2025 cap hit was about $13.8 million, that's how the Eagles end up with more cap in 2025, but it's by incurring a big dead cap hit in 2026.

Adam Schefter must be a proponent of "girl math" if he calls that saving money.

Maybe Raiders take a look at Slay?

Why would Eagles release Slay? He had a great year and is one of the best corners in the league. I get that they have Quinyon and Cooper, but Cooper is a NB, and having Mitchell and Slay on the outside is what makes that secondary great.

Just curious, can someone explain the benefits for the Eagles in terms of just releasing him? Does it free up money so that they can re-sign guys like Becton and Baun?

He has a large amount of dead money attached to his contract (Total is $22m).

If it's a post-June 1st designation, then they save about $4m against the cap this year. Most of that dead money would count against the cap in 2026.

Chargers or Broncos make a lot of sense. He wants to move back west and would get a chance to dish out some revenge on the Raiders.

Slay is always injured. Even in 2024 it seemed like he would literally get injured every single game. It was like a weekly event “Darius slay is in the medical tent”. Luckily most times he was able to come back and play later in the same game and when he was playing he was playing pretty good but that luck might run out.

There’s also younger CBs that I’d prefer to give a shot at cb. Dejean is an option but I really love him as that hybrid role where he plays a little bit of everything and I think the eagles do too. I’d see what kelee ringo can do and maybe bring Isaiah rodgers back.

As far as the rest of the free agents go, personally I think the only big free agent the eagles bring back is Zack Baun, but it sounds like his market is really hot so we will see.

Shayshawn Barkley will be wearing green when he goes into the hall of fame.

Extending shayshawn barkley saves the eagles nearly $7mill in cap space for 2025.

AJ Brown is in his prime and locked up for another what, 2 years? He's imo a top 3 WR in the NFL, right up there with Chase and Jefferson. He'd be putting up monster numbers if he was in a pass heavy offense too. I mean he basically had back to back 1500 yard seasons prior to this one, and he still had over 1000 yards receiving despite only playing 13 games this year, and the offense going all in with Barkley. And he showed out in the SB.

Lol, you'd be trading him for a pick that you hope turns out as good as him, which is a huge stretch in and of itself, but it's also a huge waste.

It’s not gonna happen so it doesn’t matter. Like I said I wouldn’t want to trade him but pick #4 is super valuable. It would essentially leave a major hole at WR though. I do think devonta smith can be a #1 but losing AJ brown would hurt that offense a lot

My expectation is that Baun is gone.

I'd be really surprised if he got extended. Howie just does not value the LB position and the fact that Baun was so successful despite him being a cheap signing on a 1-year free agent deal will only proof that to him. The only chance I see of Baun staying is if Fangio demands it.

Becton I think is far more realistic that he gets an extension.
