In fairness to me, I was saying they should play Kyrie off the ball last year when Luka was here. Defenses are getting taller and taller - and i see no reason a 6-2-6-3 guy should be trying to score over guys 4-5 inches taller than him in the hall court. That's a recipe for bad shooting nights and injuries. I really would love to see Kyrie become a pass first guy (like when J. Kidd was playing) and just score abt 18ppg, and 10apg. I can envision an offense where Kyrie is pushing it down court (looking for shooters and cutters) using the pick and roll in the half court and moving off the ball for jumpers. I wish he made the transition quicker.
There's no way he will play off ball with Exum and Dinwiddie as playmakers and there isn't in reality any Pg available, who's even remotely capable of running Mavs offense. Idiot Nico traded the best Pg in the league for injury prone big, that's the end of the story. Next year is already gone. We can talk about 26/27 season, with 3 injury prone grandpas running the show, nobody capable of running Mavs offense.
I disagree. Kyrie (if back and healthy) should be our primary point guard but play more like a pass first guy most of the game. I'm thinking John Stockton/Jason Kidd/Steve Nash. However, once the game settles down in the half court - he should be pick and roll with A.D and move without the ball when he's looking for his shot. We have a whole off-season to find another ball handler that can help out. A lot of decisions will be made by next year. We have a lot of pieces we can move.
Keepers:
AD (game needs to change as well to prioritize health, think more Karl Malone, where like Kyrie he avoids the explosive plays)
Irving (if he's healthy and it makes sense to bring him back, needs to change his game to extend his career)
Caleb Martin
Max Christie
Lively
Klay
50/50 could move or stay Pj Washington -6th man if he's not moved.
Gafford
Marshall
Powell
Prosper
Hardy
Those guys in the move category could fetch us a lot of players to build this team around.
Kyrie - change change to pass-first most of the time.
Klay - shooter
Christie - POA defender
AD - play more like Karl Malone to avoid injuries
Lively - bring in serviceable stater in case of injuries.
Bench:
PG - passer, defender, 3-point shooter. Could bring Exum but i would look for someone younger and less injury prone
SG - Martin - would share minutes with Klay and Christie
SF - Washington / Prosper - I slightly prefer Washington over Marshall because of rebounding, 3point shooter, and his ability to play SF/PF.
PF - Washington -/Prosper
C - I would add a backup center who's a veteran and can step in if Lively gets hurt.
Note: If KD is available, you have to consider it as long as you don't have to give up Lively. With that being said, we gotta make sure we're young enough as well. If I can have Lively, Ad, KD, Klay, and Kyrie. I'm good with that. While adding a backup pg thats not injury prone, martin, Christie, prosper, adding more shooting at PF, decent backup big. I'm good with that. As long as we add enough youth around the edges.
