Mavs went from being contenders with 25 years old potential GOAT player and well constructed roster to an old injured no future team not even worth tanking (picks situation 5 years down the road) within a month, self inflicted.

Wow, just wow.

The only way to change their next 5 years of nothing could be trading AD hoping someone bites, and they have a lucky break landing a SGA.

Unfortunately, it seems ego will even block that small chance of happening possibility

If there’s any justice, then Mavs home games moving forward will be half empty (on a good night) every time. I’m going to beat on the conspiracy drum until the end of time, this was an Adam Silver move and the Mavs were the sacrificial lambs, but either way, make it known that stuff like this will diminish franchise values in the future.

We'll see where it ends up in the rankings of infamy. The Joe Billy Carroll trade, the Billy King trade, Dirk for Tractor Traylor are among the strongest candidates considering they had championship implications.

But this certainly was the most inexcusable.

Not only was it incompetent. It was aggressively idiotic and insensitive.

This is THE worst trade in history of the NBA. It's the type of trade that turns fans AWAY from the game.

It's not the SGA trade, because at the time, SGA was a promising young player but nowhere what he is now. Back then, the consensus was that the Clippers won the Paul George trade....

but this Luka trade? Luka is already Luka. 5x All NBA, top 3 in MVP voting, future hall of famer, potential top 10-20 GOAT status when it's over....

I still can't believe this.

Yes, you can't fault the Clippers for the SGA trade because Kawhi said he is only coming on the condition that George would go to LA so the Clippers had no choice but to trade their young upcoming star in order to get 2 superstars in their prime.

It's already up there and I think it will take the cake if Luka wins a championship in LA, which is a real possibility.

Until then, I'd still rank the very few disastrous ones that literally led to NBA titles.

To your point, I do think they're all just placeholders for the Luka trade though.

If the Mavs just draft a player better than Luka they win the trade.

The Luka trade is the worst trade in NBA history, by far. Dirk was traded on draft day. He was just a prospect. Nobody knew he was going to become an ATG. That was the equivalent of passing on Dirk in the draft. Teams make bad draft day trades all the time. The Celtics traded the #1 overall pick for Parish, and the Warriors drafted a bum with it. That's on the Warriors FO, not the quality of the return. Also, Parish was not even a fraction of the player Luka is (and he had yet to break out when the trade happened), and the Warriors still got a haul for him. The Billy King trade was terrible, but it was a trade for draft capital. If the Celtics didn't hit on their picks, nobody would be talking about that trade right now.

The Luka trade is unique in that the Mavs traded a top-5 player just entering his prime, for an injury-prone veteran on his last legs, a middling prospect, and a pick that will end up in the 25-30 range. This, just a year after Luka led them to the Finals.

I still think about this trade every day as a Raptors fan, and it makes me livid. I knew the NBA was rigged, but this is a whole new low for the league. I've only watched a handful of NBA games since the trade. It completely soured my love for the sport.

Eh you're forgetting that Celtic's also got Kevin McHale in the trade as well, so that one is really bad.

What makes this the clear cut worst trade of all time though is that we knew about all these other trades. We had the acquired knowledge to NOT do it, but we did it any way.

As the league evolved and different trades were made we've learned so much. Why getting picks are so valuable, why you don't trade young studs, why the team sending out the best player usually always loses the trade, why getting a haul is so important, why you don't trade for injury plagued vets, ect ect

We knew all of this, the precedent was already set in stone, and the new norm was well known by everyone. That's why everyone is aware this was a call from above, because everything about this trade spits in the face of NBA history and modern known trends.

Mavs sent out the best player in the trade
Mavs didn't get a haul of picks back
Mavs traded with their conference rival
Mavs traded for a guy known to always be hurt
Mavs did trade a 25 year old superstar
Mavs didn't field any other offer/talk to other teams
Mavs didn't keep the championship core together

Mavs literally spit in the face of NBA history, and now they will go down in NBA history as a joke franchise.

NBA made it too obvious this time, and we will hear about Max Christie in the same was we heard about Marc Gasol as the Lakers build a dynasty and Mavs win 40 games and are a feel good story for a season or two in 2028

The Celtics didn't get McHale. They drafted him.

They traded the #1 and #13 picks for a yet-to-break-out Parish and the #3 pick. Nobody knew that Parish and McHale would become HOFers at the time. It was a perfectly fair trade when it happened. The Celtics' FO was just better at evaluating and developing talent than the Warriors' FO.

Okay but that's not what the post said. It wasn't even mentioned that the Celtic's got the #3 pick.

You too are being disingenuous as well here, Parish was averaging 17/12 with 3 blocks for a few years priors to that trade...

Even the minor deals the Mavs made this deadline has blown up in their face. Grimes is putting up almost 18 a game for Philly, plus they gave them a pick… for an over the hill Caleb Martin.

Either Nico has some dirt on the current owners or those owners gave him instructions to just make the worst deals imaginable to destroy the franchise for a generation…. Because my god.

Nico Harrison may be the new leader in the clubhouse for worst GM of all time.

Parish's efficiency skyrocketed after the trade. He was nowhere close to an ATG great prior to the trade. And even at his best (which he was not in GSW), he was nowhere near the player Luka is right now.

The Warriors felt Parish wasn't going to lead them anywhere, so they traded him (and their #3 pick) for 2x lottery picks, including the first overall pick.

The two trades are not even remotely comparable. The Warriors got much better return for a much less valuable player.

it's going to take a lot of time for mavs fans to emotionally get over this. i'm still a bit shocked. i guess we'll have to wait and see what is leaked from the mavs side about luka but whatever it is, unless it was some vile off court stuff, it's not going to make any difference to mavs fans.

An interesting perspective
If you want to try to measure the elements of basketball that are supposedly unmeasurable, spend a game just watching Marc Gasol.
