I imagine we will targeting a LB now as well. Nothing high end. Probably a cheap vet or someone in the draft after the 4th round.

guys who get cut are free to sign wherever immediately. guys whose contracts are expiring have to wait until free agency to sign (because it's the start of the new league year)

My question is how much does he value the 1st pick. If the general consensus is that players available at 10 are just as good as players in the second round and maybe the third, what's the benefit of keeping the 1st over trading in it for a star DE or DT? Other than money.
I think that’s a reasonable question to have if poles does indeed feel that way. If we sign a center and a couple more lower cost guys for depth. We would be able other needs filled with our 2nd and 3rd round picks. Ultimately, it all comes down to how free agency plays out. And then if a major trade happens involving the first, i imagine it would happen closer to the draft.
Harold Landry and Trey Hendrickson seem like prime candidates for that 2nd though

bosa isn't walking into a rebuild he will go to a contender on a prove it incentivized deal . Not that you guys want him it seems .Dresden wrote:Betta Bulleavit wrote:?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet

I think his best days are long gone, and he's been injured a fair bit.

I want to go on record as saying that I don’t really want Bosa at this point. However, the classification of a ‘rebuilding team’ is somewhat ambiguous because not all rebuilding teams are in the same phase of their rebuild. The Bears would likely be classified as a team that is in the later stages of their rebuild given where the roster is and the resources that we have to improve it.
Rebuilds generally happen in phases. Teardown - acquisition of talent - development of talent - finishing touches - contention. The bears are currently in phase 3 hoping to head towards phase 4 by the end of the upcoming season. So, they aren’t exactly unattractive at this point. But again, I’m not salivating over Bosa as I don’t think he’d be the right fit for this team.

For most people, giving up the money to acquire a great player is doable as is giving up a pick. It’s when you have to give up both that many people have an issue with and it’s kinda hard to disagree because you’ve gotta ask the question of whether or not said player is good enough to offset the loss of the pick AND whomever else we could have spent the money on. For me, guys like Parsons and Garrett are guys that you may take that gamble on. But that’s probably where it ends for me.

harold landry is more likely to get cut than traded for a second-round pick

Bears seem to be working trades and not relying on FAs at this point. They traded for pair of pro bowl guards rather than draft a pair in the4th round who may develop in 2-3 years. Part of tht may be that after draft combine some of the tackles they were looking at for #10 showed well and are now being picked ahead of them so maybe they keep Wright and Jones at tackle. If they want to draft a tackle maybe they trade down in the 1st and net a good pick next year.
They're making what appear to be sound moves prior to that draft

There's a few points to make though- one is that it depends a lot on where that pick is. We gave up a 6th for one guard. How often does a 6th round pick actually make an impact? At best, they are depth pieces. So giving up a 6th is almost negligible.
The other point is that you're getting something for giving up that pick- you're avoiding the likelihood that the player in question will chose to sign with another team in FA. If Joe Thuney was a FA, what are the odds he signs with the Bears? There would be a lot of competition for his services. Our odds might be 1 in 5, or even less. For the price of a 4th round pick, we made those odds 1 in 1. There aren't an unlimited supply of guards on the FA market, esp. good ones. You can't just assume that if you hadn't spent the money on Thuney, you could just get another all-pro guard for the same price. That's a point that seems to be lost in the discussion.

I think the Bears are in a very tenuous state. They are desperate (x3) to fix their offensive line because IMO, after the Fields debacle, having Williams become a bust (which IMO isn't a probable outcome, but is a very possible one) will result in a complete tear down of the organization starting with Poles. So my point, they will likely overcompensate to get guys to allow Williams to hold the ball too long but stay upright this season.

Chatter around signing Dalman now. I don't love it. He's going to be expensive, and he's injury prone. I'd rather just sign Shelton for 2 guaranteed and draft a center.
My draft board still looks like:
Membou at 10
Zabel in the 2nd
Wilson or Majors in the 3rd

You are probably right, but I feel like getting a great day 1 C is absolutely critical to "salvaging" Williams. I'm not saying it needs to be Dalman, but it needs to be someone great. I feel like I am over reacting a bit, but Williams clearly seemed to be developing the yips last season, which as many (like me) feel is the end for NFL starting QB's.
