How good is and can Payton Pritchard be?

Post#1 » by playa-hater » Thu Mar 6, 2025 5:04 pm

I think he is still so underrated. Yes, he will likely win 6th man of the year which is not to be underappreciated. Yet still feel he is nowhere nearly respected enough. A Big part is opportunity is the real mother of success. PP has always played behind so many other high level players. This season Tatum-Brown-White and Jrue are ahead and need their opportunities with the ball in their hands. Years past Boston has had Kemba Walker, Marcus Smart, M Brogdon. PP just keeps waiting for his turn. and it isn't always easy.

PP once had a triple double in the first half on a rare start. Pritchard is the only NBA in history to accomplish a game with 40+ points 10 three-pointers made,10+ rebounds 5+ asts and ZERO turnovers.. All while coming off the bench.. :o

Look at Steve Nash's first 4 years in the league. averaging around 7 points per game. Nash played behind J Kidd and Kevin Johnson. If there was message boards back then, imagine someone suggesting Nash would end up with Back to back MVPs.

With that note, I am not even closely suggesting Pritchard is or will be on Nash's level. But it should make you wonder, what If PP ever had a real opportunity? A team not built around other All-star level players. I think PP's current skill level is already Mark Price with more BB evolution. Another example is everyone could see Jalen Brunson was good on Dallas, but no one would believe Brunson would/could be in the MVP conversation if he had his own team/ Then there is Isaiah Thomas a few years back on Boston. Same thing.

So am I just buggin out after yesterday?? I am a Boston fan. But I would really like to hear what others think.

How good can Payton be? Would Pritchard be a really good starting PG? What would his Ceiling be?

Speak now please and Give my man some love!!

Jesus no. The reason he doesn’t start is because he’s a sieve on d. He’s too easy to target on that end. Until he fixes that he should always be a 6th man type.

What Pritchard and White did last night was awesome.....

He is probably the highest value contact in the league and that is also a huge plus.

I need to see more of him to give you an assessment on his ceiling. And I am looking forward to it.

This is laughable. Do you even watch Boston games? He certainly isn't a defensive stopper. But was Nash? M Price? Brunson? Darius Garland? Kemba Walker? In fact, Payton is probably > all others I just listed on defense.

You have to at least post his highlight reel from the game with this thread:

I haven't noticed this to be accurate, but I don't watch 50+ games of him a season either, but in the games I've seen, he's held his own about as well as any of the other smaller guards who get minutes

Can some Celtic fans chime in on this...in the games that I've watched he hasn't really been targeted. Any point guard who scores efficiently and facilitates without turning the ball over at a high rate is starting material in my eyes. Only knock that I have on him is that he's undersized.

He'd be an all-star with the right opportunity.

Definitely one of the best contracts in the league. Brad Stevens has done an amazing job filling out this team with all stars, near all stars, and excellent role players that could be more on other teams if given minutes.

Celtics and OKC team building has been spectacular.

He does get targeted at times. It is only natural, I guess. But he often holds up surprisingly well. He is strong/heavy (205) moves and anticipates quite well. I compare him to Kyle Lowery in that regard.

Somewhere between John Paxson and Larry Bird, maybe around Austin Reaves level.

Just like I thought before the 2020 draft... I STILL think Tre Jones is better.*

* Ok. I was wrong about that one. Pritchard is legit. But I do think Tre Jones still can be a quality player.

This is both Funny and yet kind of accurate :D

My mind says I would take Reaves, but my heart says take PP. I like my little PP more

I think his ceiling is probably Brogdon without the injuries. Reliable scoring option who can start and probably settle into a 6th man role which he pretty much has this year.

He's definitely not a sieve. His lack of height will always make him a liability on the switch, but other than that he's a good defender actually. Really built himself up on that end. Teams are really adept at exploiting guys on the switch, so that's not a small thing but it's still different than guys who are truly "sieves" on defense and can't defend anyone.

Probably a much better version of Jalen Brunson.

Cool little player, looks like he's averaging a career high 15-4-4. 27 years of age, last night he caught fire, it happens to the most random of randoms.

Yeah maybe a team could make him their Lou Will like the post Griffin Clippers

Remember Tyus Jones has been the point god of the last few years, but in a starting role he hasn't been a winner with KD, Book, and Beal

Austin Reaves. It's somewhat close, but Reaves has higher usage, volume, and an initiator role, and his EPM is higher.

Is that a stretch to call PP an Potential All star in the "right situation?? Maybe, maybe not.. It is/was a far bigger stretch to call Nash a future 2 time MVP after his first 4 seasons. PP's skill set is that good and numbers gets you into All star games, so I say not that Big of a stretch.
