Re: Official Blue Jays 2025 Spring Training Thread
I don't think anyone wants to pay him close to 600m, he will need to probably put up a 6-7 WAR season to get that in FA. But, I understand Vladdy asking for that much. It just takes 1 team in Free Agency to pay up and he's fully capable of putting up an MVP caliber season and he's betting on himself to do it. Even in a worst case scenario for him, he can still likely get at least 40m in AAV on a shorter term deal with opt outs.
The mistake by the Front Office isn't from not meeting his contract demands, it's from letting it get to this point in the first place. They needed to extend him much earlier when there was more risk from his up and down performance but letting it get to this point where it was blatantly obvious that Soto would reset the market is just inexcusable.

The ortize 13 year 585 was true
vladdy is out to lunch. they need to trade him tf outta here
The article said Vlad asked for 15 years. 585 million over 15 years is still ridiculous. This joke franchise should have been fielding offers for Vlad and trading him by opening day after he refused to sign an extension.
It will be a distraction all year with this guy, and you can still get a very good package for him right now. In July, the return for Vlad will be significantly lower when he will be so close to free agency if this team is out of it by then.
It's clear he was in the range of 13-15 years and just under the 600 mark of 585.
If Vladdy wants that contract he will need to repeat his MVP season. Even then teams will question
No thanks. Even if he repeats his 2024 season, I am not paying a first baseman like Vlad just shy of 600 million over 13-15 years. No need to get another Albatross of a contract when this team is looking at a potential rebuild in the years ahead.

Straw will reach 5 years of service time after about 20 games on the mlb roster. At that time , If we send him down, he can reject it and sign somewhere for league minimum and we are on the hook for the rest.
So he :
Stays in aaa forever
Stays on mlb roster for all of 2025 and 2026
Stays on mlb roster for all of 2025 or 2026
Stays in aaa for all of 2025 and on mlb roster for all of 2026
Stays in aaa for all of 2025 and is on mlb roster for 20g in 2026, then DFA and we pay remaining salary.
Makes 2025 team but is DFA b4 20 games and goes to aaa
Makes 2025 team out of spring or later but is DFA after 20 games and we pay remainder of salary
Just dumb move to get sasaki that backfired. Agent said no need to make a move now for IFA funds
Best new is Atkins says the move does not hold up any more spending at all. With nearly 40 pct of free agents still available,
I hope for one more move. Like a Robertson.
Otherwise this offseason should have been not getting straw , but retaining Romano and outbidding TB for Jansen. I’d like this team more with those 2. Worst case scenario, we trade their expiring contracts at deadline

Re: Official Blue Jays 2025 Spring Training Thread
Josh Kasevich is the second Jay to suffer a spring training injury that will keep him out for weeks or more. Another prospect Adam Macko was the first.
However, those aren't significant compared to a couple of injuries with division rivals. Luis Gil, the Yankees best young starter, maybe their second best overall, will be out for three months, and Andrew Kittredge, the reliever the Orioles signed after backing out of Hoffman, needs knee surgery.

Wasn't expecting much from Swanson after his season last year, but losing him is a blow to an already shaky pen beyond the top 2-3 guys. I really wish we had signed one more decent reliever.

The 12 million this organization flushed down the toilet to take Straw's contract from Cleveland, could have been spent more wisely to acquire another late inning high leverage reliever. This bullpen still needs one more quality high leverage reliever.

Montgomery and Pressly still avail. I really thought another reliever would have been signed or traded for. Still 19 days til opening day

It was bizarre they wasted 3M on Swanson in the first place
He was atrocious last season and very clearly not the same pitcher any longer

Straw continues to impress in Spring Training. Max is looking good! Springer's batting cleanup today was hilarious, as he should not be hitting any higher than 8th or 9th in this lineup come the start of the season. Clement is quickly becoming one of my favorites! I'm rooting for him.

Re: Official Blue Jays 2025 Spring Training Thread
This roster is comparable to the 2023 Jays in terms of lineup (and we had bad Vlad in 2023) and starters (except we are not getting 2023 Gausman either -- but Max is also better if healthy than 2023 version of Manoah). The big difference between the teams is the pen -- by September 2023, after the Jays had traded for Hicks, and found really good production from lower tier guys like Jackson and Cabrera will be hard to get to.
Now that 2023 team was frustrating as bleep, but they still won 89 games.

Another major issue that year was the manager

Re: Official Blue Jays 2025 Spring Training Thread
Bowden Francis certainly hasn't found his September magic yet. But Bo is having a good camp. Left field looks like an interesting battle. Alan Roden certainly isn't making it easy for the team to send him to Buffalo for the start of the season. He is not only getting hits, he's hitting major leaguers, not picking on late inning showcasing of minor league no-hopers.

The issue hasn't changed, but my main point was that a comparable team still won 89 games.
I'm not predicting that high a number for this bunch, but its still in the range of possibilities.
