i remember people would say the same stuff about john stockton's assists in the 90's. this stupid complaint isn't unique to jokic today, or unique to today's game. maybe way back when the nba was puritanical about its rules like the 60's it was different.

This is a somewhat interesting topic if framed as a generalized issue with stat tracking, using Jokic as an example instead of a silly Jokic-trolling thing.

Which brings me to the question: why are we relying on humans to track this stuff?

Same for balls and strikes, or other rules that could be implemented automatically and taking away subjectivity/human error/bias.

It won’t matter anyways in about 5 years there won’t be any score keepers. AI will take over

They're obviously good enough for the NBA to enter them into official record so they're fine.

It arguably falls into much the same area as fouls, how many of the guys that rely on 10 free throws a game were correctly sent to the line during a game? Do we really want to go back reviewing all the stats in hindsight?

Hand offs shouldn’t count as an assist. It’s not a pass, it’s literally just handing the ball off.

Sabonis averages five hand off “assists” a game. He’s really not that good as his “assists” indicate.

For era it does matter when it comes to Bob Cousy. Back then they didn’t give players an assists if they took a dribble.

I still think Bob Cousy was in a ridiculous situation though, with Russell blocking shots to him and Sharman, Jones, and Havlicek running the break. I have Kidd ranked ahead of Cousy because I think Kidd dragging those Nets teams to the finals twice is more impressive than Cousy winning with the most stacked supporting cast any star point guard of all time.

I agree but also almost every call is technically a foul, I’d guess the average star has like 1-2 calls per week that are actually bogus. People just get obsessed with the occasional mistakes and understandably annoyed at foul baiting (I think it sucks too), and all of a sudden it’s ‘these stars are all manufactured with the NBAs blessing.’ Instead of ‘stars who are really good at driving and manipulating defense get an extra FT here and there, which matters but doesn’t amount to that much.’

Serious question. Do you support ex Jazz players playing on other teams. I mean you can't support Jazz, you are chearing for them to loose for ping-pong balls. So did you enjoy watching Conely and Gobert in WCF? They beat my team after all to get there. They needed really good SG with them to go there. Someone like Edwards...or Mitchell.

Mitchell is leading the best team in the NBA, but hey you have your ping-pong balls. If you draft smarth, maybe in 5-6 years you could build a team as good as Conley/Mitchell/Gobert Jazz were. In the meantime you can **** on other teams having sucess your team never had. How bad.

I made this account 15 years ago. The NBA has changed.

At least Joker touched the ball on those plays and more or less those are going to be assists for any player. There was a video that came out maybe 2-3 months ago where Lebron was given either rebounds or assists - and when you watched the game video and lined it up with the play by play box score, he didn't touch the ball / wasn't in the play.

Maybe a year or two ago, some player on Memphis was getting hyped up for DPOY and their home scorer was giving him extra blocks or steals (I don't recall which).

I mean a "30/10/20 TD is INHERENTLY less "flashy' than a "30/20/20 TD, you can agree or not. It's like a 30/15/8 is not seen as "special" as a 30/12/11 because "OMG, TRIPLE DOUBLE!!!" I mean, people who WATCH the games, day after day, week after week, still appreciate it. But the casuals DEFINATELY want to be wowed by STATS... It is what it is. I mean, if RW's TD season had've been 33/12/7, people would've RIGHTLY said "pass a little more and you'd WIN more". But instead, they said: "OMG, TRIPLE DOUBLEEEEEE!!!" :dontknow:

None of these are assists, can anyone confirm they were counted as assists?
Yes, i posted the link to all 22 from last night, those were the 4 i called into question, there was also a 5th iffy one but overall, 17 assists is still dang impressive.

ABSOLUTELY, but for the STAT-HOUNDS, it would've been reduced to 30/20/10, ie "his team mates were letting him get rebounds", blah, blah, blah. Hell, a 30 point TD is impressive in its own RIGHT at the top level of play. Why do the scorekeepers (nothing to do with Jokic), need to "pad it"?

The better question would be, who started this faking stats and who benefitted most of it? If one guy gets cheated stats over years, its the natural reaction that score keepers of other teams adjust, but where was the root of this?
