2024-25 NBA MVP Discussion Thread (Pt. 4: Who is the MVP?)

Post#1 » by bisme37 » Wed Mar 12, 2025 7:57 pm

We're coming down to the wire in the MVP race and the previous thread hit 100 pages, so here's the new one.

Jokic and SGA are the two frontrunners and it seems like a lock that one of them will win. But the poll fits 10 options, so I left the other top candidates in there.

If you feel the poll needs adjustment, quote me and I'll reevaluate. It's set up so you can change you vote as often as you'd like.

Enjoy the discussion and go MVP candidates!

At a glance, this makes no sense. Why are all of these numbers, with huge minutes totals, higher than his +17 Net Rating? Does he only play great without his best teammates?

At the very least, there is context needed here to make his +17 make sense.

Still Jokic for me. There was a one or two day window - I think in January or whenever Jokic missed some games - when I had SGA, but, as of now, it's still Jokic for me.

Tight race. Two very deserving potential winners. I'm hoping for Jokic.

I dunno, we'll see what the Jalen Williams injury does for this whole situation.

Is there anything that can change for you to make it sga? There are only 20 games left and sga will probably rest the final few make the win/loss record even closer at the end.

For anyone that has jokic now. I can’t see how that changes. LeBron is out. Den will stay as the 2 seed

Not likely, but certainly possible. Not like Jokic can just miss a bunch of games and still be ahead.

But by now we pretty much know who these guys are. If they play a similar number of games going forward, I'll probably still have Jokic.

I really hope SGA wins just because it follows the logical progression of how the award has almost always gone.

hypothetically, record can still matter in a potential finals vs. the Cavs so i'm not that sure OKC will rest their main guys, maybe a couple of games at the end if it wouldn't matter anymore. SGA played like 34 mpg a game this season, not like he's worn out. he's clearly very focused on competing and on the MVP race and he's young, I'm betting he'd actually want to play as much as he can. this is a historic season, he must be on a hell of a ride and i'm sure he'd prefer to keep that going

I don't care who wins it either way, I think both are very deserving and u can't go wrong with either but despite thinking Jokic has had the (slightly) better and more impressive and impactful season thus far of the two, I still also have SGA simply because of tradition, like u say - because it's the way it's always been awarded.

i get why ppl want to "get with the times", especially now when he have so many more analytical tools in our disposoal that weren't available and weren't part of the discourse in previous eras - it def makes alot of sense but I guess I just don't like change, I like it when things stay the way they are, so it's SGA for me as well

Impact on team outcomes will change how voters approach the two.

EDIT: And Shai might go off like a bomb as a scorer.

Life if anything I think Jokic is getting the opposite of voter fatigue. People are making up and changing standards to give him the award, if anything.

It's a tossup but I lean Jokic. He simply does far more with far less. SGA is having a historically good season himself too and in most years he'd be the obvious MVP.

That being said I can almost guarantee, absent SGA sustaining a season ending injury in the next game thus excluding him from the race or the Nuggets going on a ridiculous tear to end the season while Jokic puts up video game numbers, SGA is going to be the MVP. The media is not going to hand Jokic his 4th MVP unless they absolutely have to

yeah, Shai going off is true I hadn't thought of that but if they drop a few more games because they're missing their 2nd best player..I mean, I don't think that would affect anyone's vote, that's just reality, no? :)

I like how you credit voters as sane, rational, non-useless bags of hammers.

What has shyne injury to one of SGA's teammates this year done? Absolutely nothing.

Business as usual. Its one of his best cases for why he is deserving of mvp.

It doesn't really mean that because SGA isn't sitting while other teams have their starters/strongest line-ups in.
