Not a travel. Halliburton got called for a travel on the play before.

If you stop crying wolf the refs will start calling the actual ones.

Check the video on X that Haliburton posted in slow motion.. 3 steps clearly (btw not rooting for any of these teams)

Maybe I’ve just been living under a rock, but one interesting thing that sticks out is that suddenly the “gather step” is a near ubiquitous term…yet I don’t think I’d ever heard it used until the last year or two.

It's actually been around for a while, it's just been exploding due to social media.

here's what i think happens.
the rules are so specious and allow for so much interpretation, the refs get tired of having to decide/guess because they're being FORCED to make calls that have no specificity - and i think it started with the "gather".

i think the only excuse for the gather was to free the offense as players started making moves that exceeded what the nba expected. like if you're an artist and there was a rule against using green and you say "i'm not using green, i'm mixing black and yellow. you just think it's green",,,and they say ",,,ummmm, oh". the refs need a guide that says "use green, mofo!!!"

Yeah, I mean, NBA players have been traveling for as long as I can remember.

Though yes, I presume you’re correct and have also either read comments or seen other vids that say it’s an NBA-specific rule. Looks like they “clarified” it in 2019. Basically seems like they just made it ok that they’ve always been traveling and now players are leaning into it harder than ever since it’s sanctioned now.

its not a travel because the step while hes gathering the ball doesnt count. Theres pages of people saying this, i even post where it says that in the rules somewhere actually. you can not like it, but that shot in the corner over freak is definitely not a travel and if it was, it would have been in the 2 minute report.

I'm not going to read through this entire thread. I'll add if you want to help defenses don't bring back handchecking but tighten up enforcement of moving screens and ball handling rules while eliminating the defensive 3 second rule.

If you did that, NBA defenses could actually play effective defense again.

If the league called carrying like they should, Luka and Durant would barely be able to get across the court.

another thing to keep in mind, there's the 'ball is still live because a dribble just ended and player didnt put hand under ball yet' pause, at which point you can actually take a step, and then add the gather, and then the one, then the two.

it's everything i dreamed of when i was learning to dribble as a kid and couldnt do.
screw these absolute garbage refs

But it seems like we've allowed so many extra steps added to NBA moves that it's hard to ascertain what's even supposed to be legal.

Not picking on Desmond Bane (one of my favorite NBA Players right now), but this is clearly a travel, right?

Are my middle aged eyes failing me?
He picks up the ball and takes 3+ steps before shooting.

Missed call?
Or legal basketball move?

Ya if you watch the clips in slow mo, then it's clearly a travel. But the current state of the nba, it's like olympic speed walking, they all running if you watch it in slow mo lol.

The fake Internet hoopers on Instagram and tiktok have bastardized the travel call. They've duped a bunch of gullible guppies into accepting this as normal with convoluted explanations that don't hold up to common sense.

It's debatable but i don't it's as Big of a deal.
I more annoyed by the epidemic of illegal screening.
If you want to try to measure the elements of basketball that are supposedly unmeasurable, spend a game just watching Marc Gasol.

the rule is different in college than the nba. knowing why this is a travel there and not in the nba is all you need.
