Lakers/Magic offense for defense
LAKERS
In:Suggs
Out:Reaves/Knecht/Hachimura
The Lakers get the perfect backcourt partner for Luka
They will have to make moves after this to balance the team.
would still have Maxi/Vincent/Vandervilt+ FRP, Swap and free agency to get a center
MAGIC
In:Reaves/Knecht/Hachimura
Out:Suggs
Magic is the worst team in the league in scoring, 3-point percentage, and three-pointers made. This trade should largely solve those problems in one fell swoop. The defense with Black/KCP in the backcourt should at least stay afloat.

I think most Magic fans would take this deal, in theory.

I love Suggs and AR… actually, they would be a perfect pairing. Here’s the question though, does AR want to be anywhere except LA? Seems like he gave the Lakers a discount to stay and didn’t he basically force his way there to begin with?

and Luka wanted to spend his entire career as a Maverick... I think Reaves' future changed course with the Luka trade. I've seen enough of Luka to know that it will be extremely difficult to build a team capable of taking down Boston (for example) with those 2 in the backcourt... you can survive with 1, not both... I also think he would have a more prominent role in Orlando with much more ball in his hands and protected on defense... it will be better for his career and his wallet.

I don't see a reason for the Magic to accept this garbage from the Lakers. Jalen Suggs is amazing 3 and D player who every team is going to want to have on their roster. This trade is basically telling me that Jalen Suggs is worth 2 meh expiring and a unplayable rookie/sophomore who's already 24 year old, which is far from the truth. This seem to be another example of Austin being massively overvalued in these trades. Austin Reaves value should be viewed as the same is D'Angelo Russell or Gary Trent Jr. He basically does the same thing as them and as we have the seen over the last year or 2 the NBA have no real interest in these types of player who can't defend and isn't that good on offense to justify it.The Lakers need to attach 2-3 1st round picks just for the Magic to consider and they don't have those picks,so the trade is totally DOA.

I understand that you don't do it... but garbage?? So what would you call Orlando's guard rotation? Reaves has one of the best contracts in the league, averages more assists than any Orlando Magic player and would instantly be their best playmaker and shooter by a wide margin. Knecht has proven in his first year that he will be an NBA player for the next decade. Sugg, who is very good and I love, brings with him some availability issues, which we shouldn't ignore. He has missed +/- 120 games (a season and a half) in his young 4-year career... while earning more than 20 million more per year.

Reaves is now a 14~ million dollar expiring unless he has some major injury.. he is not opting in to a 15 million dollar player option next offseason… An offseason where a few teams have cap space and JJJ/Luka/Fox will likely no longer be available.
Reaves is definitely underpaid next season and a good contract though... But Suggs is the better one. He is locked up for four years, through league’s 10% cap raises, on a declining deal.. He’s a perfect third piece and thanks to the declining contract, Orlando can keep the trio together for 4 more years with no tax concerns really.
Orlando should not consider the OP imo.
Better to trade “3” firsts for Reaves and then once/if he is locked up the following year, decide who to trade between he and Suggs (assuming ownership won’t pay the tax at all)
Orlando has been overly patient/committed to this group and their internal development.. dont see them breaking that trend unless it’s for a clear upgrade.

100%...I say no from ORL, but the "outrage" is a little silly. First of all, you'd negotiate an extension with Reaves before you sign anything - just like Butler and Ingram. I think Reaves is playing at his ceiling and can certainly maintain it, but Suggs has a way higher ceiling, even just on the offensive end (and a lower floor on offensive end, which would be offset by his insane defense and intangibles as the heart of any team).
I'd love to throw picks at LaL for Reaves, and they'd have to take back matching salary they might not relish...WCJ makes a lot of sense. I'd even say Goga, but I'd REALLY like to do whatever else I'd need to do to end up with Maluach in the draft at the same time.

I'm a relatively casual watcher of Orlando, but have caught a few of their games both before and after Suggs went out. He makes a massive difference on both ends of the floor, and his contract is a locked-in steal. I'd kill to add him to Detroit as Cade's running mate.
If I was running the Orlando FO, Suggs is the last player I'm trading. Literally. He's their best asset IMO. My first attempt to fix the roster would be packaging up some of their good defenders and/or FRPs for a starting quality PG, but if I can't do that, I'd trade one of Paolo or Franz before I move Suggs.

Re: Lakers/Magic offense for defense
I just KNOW that KCP would "magically" (
) regain his prior 3pt shooting pace playing with Luka and Lebron and play a vital role in helping LAL contending next year. KCP, at his best, next to Luka, with LBJ...would be once again living his best life...like he did with LBJ before and with Jokic in DEN. He's not done...but LAL'd have to believe that. ORL would add a decent pick as "punishment" for KCP's single bad shooting year of his recent career, and take back salary to match. It would all be contingent on Reaves declining his option and re-upping for a reasonable amount like 4yr/$85m, declining...I'd also want to feel that Reaves is pumped for the opportunity to be lead ball handler on a dynamic young team that has a huge hole that he fits. He is definitely a proud Laker, but this would be a good opportunity to spread his wings.
Wendell Carter is a direct fit for LAL as well and his salary matches Reaves, but...
ORL sends: Wendell Carter, KCP, ORL 26 frp (Top 5)
LAL sends: Austin Reaves, Rui, Knecht
or...
ORL sends: KCP, ORL 26 frp (Top 5)
LAL sends: Reaves, Vando

Orlando is not trading Suggs when he is the best player in the package. AR doesn't not have that much value. Orlando has plenty of bigs to spare. Maybe some deal using those and Reeves makes more sense?

He was RFA agent. Nobody bidded on him. I'm sure he willing to sign with any team willing to give his first large pay day.

Why are the Magic giving up picks here? The fact the Magic didn't want D'Angelo Russell as a Free Agent without having to giving up anything shows me that Austin would not be sought after by the Magic. Maybe a KCP for Austin/other expiring filler straight up swap may make sense for both sides, but even then I don't think the Magic would not be overly trilled about giving a gloried D'Angelo Russell a huge pay day.

Reaves is a nice fit WITH Suggs. Everyone can see Orlando’s need and can pressure them to overpay, but they aren’t going to trade Suggs. If the Lakers want defense, I’m sure Orlando could be convinced to part with KCP and Black. Work something around that.

Kcp doesnt get u reaves. A 32yo that dropped off making 22m/year. For orlando its basicly, if its on our timeline its on lakers timeline. U can probably get something around kleber for kcp, but then this thread is ot since it started with reaves and suggs

Re: Lakers/Magic offense for defense
Anthony Black's defensive metrics are up there with KCP and Suggs...He's big for a guard, but certainly agile...hasn't yet really shown the PG skills ORL hoped for or, on most nights, the aggressive scoring ORL needs at that spot...but he's still got a lot of promise and he's on his rookie deal. I'm certainly not saying that he gets ORL Reaves, but maybe he's part of the package.
Alternatively, but still "offense for defense"...Knecht for Black straight up
or,
"Minister of Defense" Isaac ($15m), Anthony Black ($8m), Gary Harris ($7.5m exp), DEN 25 frp
for: Reaves ($14m), Rui ($18m exp)

Or maybe you are overrating Austin value around the NBA. Players who can't bridge the gap between their lack of defense with overwhelming offense simply do not hold much value in the NBA with the new CBA rules. We have seen this with Gary Trent Jr. Most were expecting him to get atleast a tax payer mid level if not more, but instead he ended having to settle for a vet min. Same with Tyus Jones. D'Angelo Russell will be lucky to get much more than a tax payer mid level in Free Agency. Grayson Allen is now viewed as a possible bad contract. I think a KCP/Austin Reaves swap straight up without the Magic adding anything is fair.

Completely agree.
We're all still learning what the new CBA means, but it is driving a huge shift in player valuations. Under the current CBA, the first apron kicks in at 126% of the salary cap, and the second apron at 134% of the cap. You have to be able to fit a competitive squad within those limits, and that means some player types just don't have the same contract/trade value that thye did even 18 months ago.
In particular, players who are good-but-not-elite at scoring, and shaky on D, seem to be taking a large hit.
