He really will though lol, biggest issue is the defense in the paint and ppl sagging off their men to protect the middle(until Mitch got back) come playoff time this defense will be better then last year, the offense is light years better, just stay healthy

Ive been singing this tune all season.

Mitch is EXACTLY what the rigid Thibs D was missing.

Once the chemistry gels and Mitch gets his full rythym and timing back this team can be more like the dominant D of last year post OG (where we went like 20-5) but with more efficient offense.

But it comes with the big IF that Thibs plays the right substitution patterns and minutes for these guys so they dont burn out.

Weird to see Josh with a 103 DRG. Feels like people are always raining 3s on him.

It’s nice to see him having an impact.

However, I am concerned with his ability to stay healthy.

It may not be our year, but things are coming together for us. The defense coming together, Bridges & Towns stepping up with Jalen out, Shamet finding his stride, if we get good news about Jalen tomorrow we could hit the playoffs with good depth...even if Payne doesn't get out of his funk.

Blended lineups:
Brunson - 2x McBride/Shamet/Hart/Bridges - OG - Robinson
McBride - 2x Bridges/Shamet/Hart/OG - Towns - Robinson
McBride - 2x Bridges/Shamet/Hart/OG - Achiuwa - Towns

Closing lineup:
Brunson - Bridges* - Hart* - Anunoby* - Towns
Brunson - Bridges* - Anunoby* - Towns - Robinson
*McBride/Shamet

Even though you claim Brunson sucks at controlling the pace of the game and credit his absence for rejuvenating the defense I still like him anyway no matter how much you try to tear this man down. You portray him as a system PG and frequently point out how we’ve won 3 of 4 without him and will likely continue winning without him but I think there’s more to the story! Yes it is true that Thibs was finally forced to end his love affair with the aging veteran son of the assistant coach and finally play our repressed homegrown talent in the starting position he deserves, but Brunson is coming back soon and I promise he heard everything y'all are saying about him. I’m keeping a Brunson apology list and your name is at the top

I'm just curious as to why Robinson went from 2.4 BPG in his rookie year to basically averaging 1 the last 5 seasons.

He learned how not to foul out.

Quoting Mitch's raw defensive rating numbers doesn't provide enough context for me. Also these are all pretty small sample sizes against some questionable competition so I think we'll just have to wait until April to get a better feel for all of it. And also Brunson being out while Mitch increases his minutes also has had an effect on the defense certainly.

I think a more reflective data point is the numbers with Precious vs. Mitch which I think provide a better barometer for how Mitch is specifically impacting this team.

All numbers according to Cleaning The Glass

Precious and No KAT on the floor - 113.9 off/ 114.2 def/ Net -0.3
Precious and KAT - 118.1 off/ 116.9 def/ Net +1.2
KAT and No Precious - 122.8 off/ 113.2 def/ Net +9.6
Mitch and No KAT on the floor - 113.2 off/111.6 def/ +1.6 Net
Mitch and KAT on the floor (extremely small sample here) - 150 off/ 107.9 def/ +42.1 Net!!!

So I think what I take away from it is that the Knicks basically couldn't THRIVE without KAT on the floor pre-Mitch. We were always treading water in the frontcourt without KAT while Mitch has been a slight positive so far without him. Reason being is that Precious didn't make up for it enough defensively because he can't be a full time 5 and he had to be attached to the hip with the starters (sans Hart) to have viable lineups offensively... Same with Sims who essentially acted as a more athletic but smaller version of Mitch.

Thibs probably waited a smidge too late to go to Huk and then of course he got hurt. But he was probably the closest replica we could find to Hartenstein and he's a rookie so he made a ton of dumb mistakes that probably drive Thibs crazy which is why he was reluctant but the small sample size of Huk/Towns minutes may have actually foreshadowed the impact Mitch would have with Towns. Those numbers are extremely good as well.

So yes while Mitch's raw defensive rating numbers may not show much difference... it's the fact that he was replacing most of the minutes that would have went to Precious/Sims/Huk at the 5 that is making a big difference. Also the Knicks can somewhat survive Hart/Mitch minutes because even though the spacing is less than ideal they can rebound way more of their misses with those 2 on the court. Whereas Precious/Hart provides you the same spacing issues without even coming close to the rebounding impact.

The really exciting part for the Knicks going forward is that it seems like Mitch actually amplifies KAT's impact. Again small sample size but, if the team performs better with Mitch and KAT on the floor than just with KAT and no Mitch (which is already a good number) then that gives us some more lineup optionality come playoff time.

he probably stopped trying to block every shot so he wouldn't be in foul trouble all the time

His rookie year, he averaged 3.3 fouls per game

his fouls per game (and per 36 minutes) have gotten lower every season

this season, he is at a career low 1.6 fouls per game, though he is playing a career low 16.1 mpg

right now his fouls per 36 are tied for 2nd lowest (3.6 fouls per 36 minutes)

last season, he was at 2.6 fouls per 36 minutes

Protect the paint!

I think that he won’t have to do that as much with Mitch on the floor
