Jakob Poeltl might be our most impactful player

Post#1 » by ReggieSlater » Wed Mar 19, 2025 9:45 pm

Watching these games and seeing the value of Poeltl in and out of the lineup, from the eye test, he seems to be the player that provides the most positive impact on the team. Seems to impact more than RJ, IQ and even Barnes. Might not be so disposable.

Yea probably, that's why they need to sit him the rest of the season

I've been saying it for months that we should hold onto him.

With the focus likely to be on winning next season, it made no sense to move him for anything other than a complete overpay.

Players like Poeltl are glue that's hard to replace.

Easy conclusion to come to seeing as we have no one who can adequately replace any of his minutes.

If we had a legit backup his impact wouldn't look quite the same.

Bingo, much less about Jak and more about having a competent centre.

I always understood the criticism of the timing and value of the Poeltl trade.

I never understood the criticism of his ability. He's great.

thats why we need a big from this draft badly, our big man depth behind poeltl is just awful, and the free agent center list this summer is also terrible as it is every summer

it should be khaman or queen if we in the 7-9 range, can play 15-20min off bench behind poeltl, and then take over in 5 years

The same thing happened when we had Fred with no real backup. There's a big difference between being the best player vs the most important player.

This speaks to flaws in roster construction more than the player. Now with that said, Poeltl has been great in his role and still deserves his flowers.

Our offensive scheme makes heavily use of a passing big.
Would he be this great on another team? No. Some teams may prefer a lob threat with shot blocking ability.

Yak/Maluach/Robinson is a really nice centre rotation
2019 Eastern Conference All Stars

Derozan
Lowry
Ibaka
Valanciunas
Van Vleet
Delon Wright
Lebron
Embiid

There are only 2 teams in the league that rank in the top 6 in offensive and defensive efficiency: the Golden State Warriors and the Toronto Raptors.

Poeltl is our most impactful player in the exact same way Fred VanVleet was our most impactful player from 2021-2023

Spoiler:
Masai assembled no backup for their positions

This statement takes me back to the post-championship era. Even though Marc Gasol wasn't the best player on 2019 team, I always thought he would be the most difficult to replace. His defense, facilitation on offense and floor spacing was both very unique and a catalyst that sparked others' games.

Not saying Poeltl is Gasol, but he also is a key catalyst for any success we've had.

Marc Gasol was extremely good. Just not in overtly clear ways for the casual fan to see, I think. He was literally a DPOY center who could score in the teens (when he was younger), was a good passer, hit his FTs at a very good rate, had some pretty reasonable range (long twos and threes) and was reasonably efficient. And even in his older form for us, he fit in very, very well. Just an excellent cog in our machine.

He's the most impactful because our center & forward depth is pitiful

I'd also argue Scottie is more impactful overall/would be universally seen as such if we had two capable big men to field at the 5 but right now that's not a luxury we have

Completely disagree. Jakob plays within his ability and does what a C does to anchor your defense. Fred was an offensive minded PG. your PG is your offense engine and should be making players around him better.

I’be been saying this the day we got Jakob he is the most important player on this team. What the Raps need right now is a true PG. IQ is not that guy. Chris Paul at 40 would arguably have a bigger impact on this team.

Would love us to get Cason Wallace. That guy is insanely underrated and exactly what we need.
