2 firsts? We should take that and run as fast as we can the other way if that's out there. I just don't see any team dumb enough to do that though.

I wouldn't take it unless the 1st is at least in the top 15

Why not? That’s insane value for him. Plus we wouldn’t have to pay him a big extension.

Because no team is dumb enough to offer 2 firsts for him.

Actually the 49ers gave three firsts for Lance which was incredably stupid. So teams do that

That's because we thought he was a blue chip prospect.

So again, no deal yet.

Does that suggest there's a gap between the team and Purdy on the extension?

We saw how the deals for Bosa and Aiyuk weren't done until the season had begun.

Maybe if Purdy was asked to sign a more team-friendly deal to retain to her players on the team, he might be receptive. However, they've let a lot of players walk so it can't be that.

Eventually the team pays but they seem to take it down to the limit, even if it disrupts the player's preparations for the season.

Is Purdy going to miss training camp and preseason, maybe a regular season game or two?

I don’t think we’d talked about how their willingness to let a lot of guys go would undermine their position in asking Purdy to take a team-friendlier deal, good point. I actually do think Brock might, but his reps would be hammering him not to, but yeah, under the circumstances that’s the Niners trying to have it both ways.

It's March. A little silly to be talking about missing regular season games at this point.

Both sides have said there is no rush at this point and things are going along as expected and they expect negotiations to ramp up during April

We don't need a deal. He's under contract for this year, and then we have the right make him play on the tag for 2 years after that. There is absolutely no reason for the team to cave on this.

Reports I've seen is they aren't close but they aren't crazy far apart and both sides are on good terms.

I think the deadline they would like to get it done is before offseason work starts and I'd say be worried if it's not done when that starts up.

Is there any way we can get Lynch to stop saying how confident he is that they’ll get ______ signed on time?

Dan Patrick on Purdy:

Read on Twitter

This just kind of irritates me. It's lazy. He may not be wrong with the overarching theme of Purdy is not an elite QB who can carry a team, but the rationale is bad.

"My sources...say he can't make those throws to the numbers. That's not his strength. And you have to be able to make those throws. Now, if you don't have those receivers who can create that separation, that makes it a lot more difficult for Brock Purdy to lead your team."

Two things. First, anyone who thinks Purdy can't throw outside the numbers just hasn't watched the tape. Purdy throws the out extremely well. He doesn't do it with elite arm strength, he does it with unique anticipation and timing. And it's almost impossible to stop. He doesn't have great arm strength, and that will show up particularly when he tries to throw bombs downfield. But outside of that, he can make almost every throw because of how he sees the game.

Second, love that he cites losing Deebo and then talks about Purdy not having receivers who can create separation. Deebo couldn't separate from middle-of-the-road LBs in man coverage last year. Our WRs were among the worst (maybe THE worst?) in the league at gaining separation last year. Admittedly Purdy had a down year, but I expect that he will rebound somewhat this year, and potentially a lot if we actually, you know, replace Jake Brendel.

Why would you need sources to tell you what throws he can and can't make? You can literally watch around 2 and a half seasons worth of games to see what his range of throws are.

And what QB doesn't need guys that can get open and get separation? Even the guys we considered elite aren't consistently throwing tight window throws and they throw to guys open all the time. I mean that's the whole reason they read the field is to find the guy that's open. You design plays to get guys open and you draft guys that are good route runners to get open.

I think it's completely fair to discuss if Purdy is good enough to make it work with pieces that might not be the greatest but I find a lot of the arguments against Purdy just take things to an absurd degree. Like every throw has to be a perfect pass to a tripled covered UDFA or it doesn't count as a good play by Purdy.

Yeah, I guess it's inherently lazy to go on a show and say, "Well I don't personally have an opinion on this because I haven't watched the player, but this is what I hear...." Why even have him on to ask the question? Or knowing that the question might be asked, why don't you at least watch some cut-ups of the player? There's plenty available, even just on YouTube.

You try to work something out, but if push comes to shove on this one, I wouldn't be afraid to play some hardball with him. He's under contract this year and we can franchise him for two more. $5 million this year, maybe $43 million next year, let's say $50 million the year after that. That's under $100 million for three years with no injury guarantees. Or he can take a deal in the $45 million range. He can hold out, but his play last year gave rise to some legit questions about his ability to elevate the team.

It's probably too late to do this, but I'd consider letting him test the market if we were really at am impasse. Let him talk to other teams. If someone will offer a top-10 pick this year and two more first-round picks, either we trade him or we give him $55 million. If it's one top-16 pick and a first next year, we're down to $50 million. If it's one top-16 pick, we're at $45 million. A 17-32 picks, we're at $40 million. It's not clear to me that there is a huge market for him, but if there is, I would strongly consider letting him walk, loading up on picks, and seeing what we can otherwise pull together at the position.
