Getting a Kyrie replacement

Post#1 » by aguiar95 » Sun Mar 23, 2025 2:57 pm

I imagine DAL wants to run it back, adding a Kyrie replacement untill he gets back, using our 1st. Target would be a starter and primary ball-handler (probably 35 mpg) untill Ky gets back, then his role would be a 6th man (30mpg) leading the 2nd unit.

Offer would be: Fillers (Martin, Hardy, Powell, Prosper) + '25 DAL 1st (11-16 range, 12th right now). Obviously for some targets DAL would get something back (2nds, prospect).

Targets that could fit:

Sexton (UTA), White (CHI), Monk (SAC), Simons (POR), DeRozan (SAC) comes to mind.

Other path would be to offer Tax-MLE to Jones (PHX), Schroder (DET), Paul (SAS) or Russell (BKN) with that starting role in mind (without spending the pick), but it's risky.

What would y'all do? Which target feels better for DAL's needs?

Team would be:

Target (Irving)/Thompson/Washington/Davis/Lively
Dinwiddie (Target)/Christie/Marshall/Gafford

We need an elite playmaker...given that KI would eventually be back for the all-star, I would sign CP3 (5/6 million/year) who can still play, at least during the regular season. I would trade for a combo guard who can play alongside KI, when the time comes...
Affordable cost goals in principle bring in the local guy M.Smart...using Gafford (who I don't think they want/should extend) + Powell.
Gafford to a 3rd team (Hawks or Lakers?).
In the Draft I would try to select Jakucionis or Fears (even if they have to use the Lakers' pick).

Alternatively I would be open to a trade for DDR, if we are at a loss for Gafford/Hardy/Powell or even Middleton.
In short, use Gafford/Hardy/Powell for any available upgrades, as I think they can be replaced with K. Jones (Gafford) / K. Edwards (Powell) / B. Williams (Hardy) on minimum contracts

If CP will sign, that’s it. Run the roster back and hope for health, Kyrie getting back at right time. Get aggressive in January if Kyrie is healthy and the team looks good enough (trade 2025 rookie, 2029 LAL pick, etc)

I know there is no realism, but if realgm is right on Topic’s value.. I’d see if Presti takes the 2029 LAL first? Call it top 6 protected turns into the Dallas 2030 first?

Might be a complete bust, might not be NBA ready, etc. but if it does end up making Dallas worse for a year, oh well. 2026 draft pick improved…

CP3 is the obvious fit.

He'd love to play for Kidd, to play with Davis and eventually Kyrie.

Will have a starting role on a contender.

I'm 95% sure this happens

I feel like Fox isn't a good fit for the Spurs, especially alongside Castle. Is there any chance the SPURS could move him?
I think he'd be a great fit for the new Mavs (even less realistic, given they're conference rivals?) How would a 25-RFP offer look for the Mavs (lottery pick) + Lively + filler (Klay/Martin/Powell/Hardy)?..
The SPURS divert the Mavs' package (they keep Lively) for a better fit, like T. Young?

Feel like there’s a Simons for Klay, Hardy, Powell deal. (Think you need Prosper as well for salaries, or the 2025 first delayed)

Those that like Simons a lot, give up Dallas’ 2025 first?

Those who like him less, the 2029 LAL first (top 8 protection, roll into Dallas 2030 first top 4? Protected)

Problem with all the combo guards listed is they can’t play with Kyrie for long stretches as the defense would be awful. But in general, Dallas needs another playmaker.

I could see a world where Dallas generates enough value out of Gafford in a 3 team deal to land Sexton.

Where do you fall on Luka as a defender? Because Dallas went to the Finals on the strength of their defense last year and that without Anthony Davis.

Warriors won a title playing Steph/Poole together for huge minutes. Kyrie might not be quite as good a defender as Curry was then, but its got to be close. He's not a guy getting abused out there. And Poole was, well Poole.

I think Dallas in theory can still make defense work even if you add a Sexton or Simons type. Especially since the minutes together would be 5-6 minutes a half and if it was an issue, you would simply never close the games like that.

I think the offense need is greater than any minor defensive issues.

Sexton is a good fit. He is built thicker than most Point Guards and has a diverse offensive game, suited to play on-ball or off-ball and rebounds well.

They should have gotten Reaves in the Luka trade and that's who they should target, not in favour of Sexton, wanted him for 4 years when Mavs had Luka, he's great next to him, not instead of him.
CP3 for the TPMLE is an option also, since the team is loaded at all positions except PG.

Reaves is a good fit offensively alongside Luka, and they can certainly get away with it against most teams, overwhelming them with their immense talent. But if they're looking to win a championship, they'll have to split that duo (especially if LeBron is going to play for a couple more years) since Boston (and likely the Thunder) will attack them relentlessly, and you can't give such obvious advantages to these elite teams. I also think he'd be a perfect fit for the Mavs, and they should have included him in the Luka trade. There are plenty of combinations that seem to work.
Reaves + Lakers 31 for Christie/Lively?
Reaves for Gafford + Lakers 29?
Reaves for Lively/Martin?

I's keep Lively, Gafford/Lakers 1st isn't enough, I'd send 25 1st also if the Lakers have a deal in place with it.

If I'm the LAKERS I accept that, and I make it bigger..

Reaves to MAVS

Gafford to HAWKS
(They get a replacement for Capela)

FRP Lakers 25(by Hawks now 24) to WOLVES
(They save money, to keep NAW/Naz and a late FRP)

MAVS FRP25 (now 12)/Lakers 29 to JAZZ
gets a good loot before having to pay Kessler

DDV/Kessler to LAKERS..
They better fit Luka/Bron's weaknesses

Good points TC re the offensive need being greater than the defensive need. Only issue with your point is your talking about teams built around Stephen Curry and Luka Doncic, generational talents that cover a lot of other roster issues.

I think Sexton/Simons as long as it doesn’t cost too much is the way to go.
