Way to much for Cam. The Pistons are in a unique position to not need any major trades.

Moving Ivey now, would be hasty, and just create another hole in the starting lineup, which is unnecessary.

I believe the Pistons have several targets for the PF role for next season, without trades.

I don't think having $49 million locked into the PF position next season (Harris + Johnson) without it resulting in an all-star level player there is the right move for us. Not even sure which of those two guys would start.

With Thompson being very versatile and Cam easily able to play the 3, imagine something like this.
Cade/Thompson/Johnson/Harris/Duren
Schroeder/Sasser/Beasley/Holland/Stewart..

In this scenario you let THJ go..plus Harris would be expiring and you avoid having to pay Ivey in 1 year

Ivey improved a lot this year and is still on his rookie deal. Don’t just give that away. And this summer, teams will still be trying to shed salary. There will be good deals if you absorb some cap dollars.

I don’t see it. It’s not horrible and you can easily argue for it. But this feels more like Detroit would’ve done a year ago.

Crazy how this trade gets proposed right after Cam goes down with back issues….

I agree with your core point. With Cade likely headed to All-NBA and taking up 30% of the cap starting next year, I doubt there will be room for a 3+D player like Cam Johnson at over 13% of the cap in each of the next 3 years. We have a bunch of challenging decisions on rookie extensions coming up -- we probably can't afford to keep all of Duren/Ivey/Thompson/Holland -- and it makes little sense committing to Cam Johnson before those decisions are made (mostly over the next 16 months)

I’ve clearly made my ‘trade Ivey’ preference well-known, but I don’t like this deal. We need a star (with more added from Detroit) or a solid value contract to help control payroll. Cam Johnson is not the former and really not the latter, either.

I do think the fit is solid. Just not sure about the direction and timing. If this is what Ivey is worth right now, I’d rather wait until he’s healthy again and try and up his trade value.

I would consider this for Brooklyn, I'm probably higher on Ivey than other Nets fans.

Well he'd factor in for a season at least!

That said, and I know I'm sometimes on an island with this take, I fully expect Tobias to reup with the Pistons and to stay on the team until he retires. His wife's family is from the area, *he* made the decision to come back rather than us courting him, he clearly fits here, he's a great veteran leader, and I can't see his wanting to go anywhere else or Trajan really wanting to move on from him. (Hopefully the next contract will be a bit less per season).

I just don’t see the fit with Johnson right now. Harris appears lo led into the 4 spot. I also see Ivey having slightly more value than Cam. Ivey is younger and has shown improvement. If the Pistons moved off Tobias, I’d consider Cam/pick compensation for Ivey/SM (changing original post). Overall though, I think that the ask by the Nets (two picks or a younger player with upside and pick) is too much for the Pistons in my eyes.
