If Jose Alvarado can play in the NBA so can JD one day maybe not for the Celtics but somewhere.

Alvarado is committed to defense. He will harass you endlessly and play real physical. He will celebrate a good defensive stop
JD's defense is meh at best and he seems disinterested in the defense part of the game

Alvarado wins that match-up in practice all day long.

That’s the difference JD needs to want it as bad as Alvarado does. JD needs to be active, hustle and go out there and go all out on D.

JD Davison was named G league player of the month. Davison averaged 28.7 points, 7.8 assists, and 7 rebounds in February. He also scored 34 in today's win.
Maine has been winning regularly lately, and is now a half game out of the top spot in the East.

Re: Welcome to Boston, JD Davison! – (Signed 3rd yr Two-Way w/Celtics)
My biggest issue with JD is that his ceiling is as a roleplayer and to reach that ceiling you need to give him the ball and let him cook. That's just not what I want from a bench guard. If you take the ball out of his hands his ceiling is so much lower. With a star studded team I want complimentary pieces not guys who are going to need to be somewhat ball dominant.
if we were the Bucks or or maybe like the Warriors, teams that are built around singular star players who are going to struggle without them on the court, I'd be more inclined to give JD a shot. Let him cook with the 2nd unit and hope to catch lightning in a bottle. But with us, we've got too many guys I'd already rather be playing through that it just doesn't make sense to hand the keys for stretches to Davison.
Assuming we cut him loose after this two-way and don't give him a roster spot I'd like to see him with the Spurs. His aggressive scoring style paired with Wemby would be great. He plays so downhill that teams focusing on Wemby would give him free run to the rim and if he can master the lob to Wemby, who has to be the easiest lob target ever invented, that duo would be fun. Plus defensively you've got as good a backstop as you could ever hope for. If Chris Paul goes elsewhere, Castle/Fox can be your 1-2 starting back-court and JD a microwave off the bench.

how is this guy so amazing in the g league and then such a dud in the nba. it's like two completely different players. the competition level is for sure a reason, that's obvious. but is it his role? like he'd be better suited on a lottery team that maybe has an injury to a starter and he comes in and finally gets an opportunity.

It's that Davison hasn't showed his game in his limited NBA appearances, where he's tight, indecisive, and playing artificially slow. Bigger players all over the floor have a lot to do with it, but even more it's being overcautious and hesitant.
I mean, watching him play for Boston so far, you'd have no idea how fast and athletic he is.
Scheierman was overthinking all year in the NBA too, then recently relaxed and started showing what he can do. There's no judging Davison until he relaxes. He has to prove it, but he has genuine talent.
Next year he'll get his chance to succeed or fail, in Boston or elsewhere.

Davison was pretty bad when he was drafted. But his game has improved; he no longer plays like a chicken with its head cut off. And he's only 22. That's younger than many guys in the 2025 draft. So I wouldn't write him off just yet.

34/5/5/1/2 on 21 shots and +13 in 5-pt win. Maine now 20-11.

Yep. How many 3s did Grant 3&D Williams miss to start his career? JD can't be on a 2-way again next year, can he?

"Maine Celtics head coach Tyler Lashbrook complimented Davison’s intelligence after the win.
“The thing that might surprise other people is just how smart he is — because he’s such a quiet person off the court,” he said. “He’s one of, if he’s not the, smartest player I have ever been around in terms of managing situations and understanding coverages and understanding reads and understanding situations. He is a really high-level IQ basketball player.”
That’s pretty high praise coming from a coach who has been around elite players on both the Celtics’ and 76ers’ for the past few seasons."

Then an important offseason for JD. He wants that 14th seat next year.

Derrick White:
“JD is probably our best lob thrower, just the way he manipulates the defense in the pick-and-roll is really high-level. Playing against him a lot in training camp, he was a hard guard.”
Jaylen Brown:
“You could tell he took it to another level in training camp,” Brown said. “I think he’s been able to learn from our guys, going against Payton [Pritchard], going against Jrue [Holiday] and Derrick [White].”
“He’s gotten so much better, and that’s credit to him. He’s developed at a high rate.”
Tyler Lashbrook:
“I can’t even really put into words how important he is.”
Al Horford:
“JD is a really good passer, and he has a really good feel for the game, especially when he’s playing pick-and-roll.”“He’s a real guard. He’s able to kind of manipulate the defense. And then his ability to get to the basket, he’s really explosive.”
Jrue Holiday:
“He’s definitely going to be a really good NBA player.”

nice of guys to say all that to help his G league MVP campaign
and he's only 22.5 years old, but I still don't buy it translating to the NBA level -- hope I'm wrong!
