Reddick saw the lineups that worked and didn't and made changes fast. He's actually active during games, and now he has found an elite defense with 40 year old Bron and fat Luka in it. He certainly has his credit on making the team mesh as fast as they did.
Don't even mention them in the same page ever again. They don't even belong in the same library. Reddick is a great coach. Ham was just a potatoe.
As mentioned by other intelligent people that are not OP, the thread is now irrelevant as the Lakers have given Reddick a roster that is completely different in it's construction, but up until that trade, as confirmed by others, Reddick and Ham were on essentially the same W/L trajectory.
While true in that sense anyone with eyes could see that the Lakers were better with JJ even from the start. They just hadn't clicked yet but JJ was just a better coach from the start and the team was actually running sets, paying attention and putting effort.

Godymas wrote:So far JJ Redick has taken virtually the same Lakers roster with an actual slam dunk of a draft pick to a worse outcome than Darvin Ham at this point in the season.
At the end of November the Lakers were 11-9 last year. Today the Lakes are currently 11-8.
However, the outcome is worse because the Lakers have been knocked out of the NBA Cup while Ham's Lakers, as we know, would go on to win the NBA Cup.
The NBA Cup was not a wash, that same Pacers team that the Lakers beat would go on to make the ECF in the playoffs that year.
The Lakers are a different team this year. Ham had the Lakers play with pace. They were 2nd and 3rd in the league in pace. Additionally, the Lakers were closer to average in terms of their defense and offense with a barely positive net rating. Under JJ's tenure the Lakers have had one of the worst defenses in the NBA and are winning games off their offense. Their pace is significantly slower too. Their net rating is negative and implies their record is better than their actual performance.
Now obviously there are minute differences between this year and last year. LeBron is a year older, Dalton Knecht is the rookie rather than the bust Jalen Hood Schifino. Taurean Prince is not on the team anymore.
But to blame Darvin Ham when he was responsible for pushing the Lakers to that WCF appearance is a bit extreme. Btw, the Lakers lost to the same team in the playoffs two years in a row under Darvin Ham. There is only so much a coach can do against a clear mismatch of rosters.
This thread is never gonna die, just multiply!!

Look, even if JJ is gonna turn out to be a terrible head coach -- there's no way Lakers fans owe a guy that says stuff like that - as the head coach of the freaking Lakers - an apology.
He had too many embarrassing quotes like that.

Reddick and Ham weren't even on the same trajectory when the myth was being pushed, (after the Bucks play-in trophy). JJ was a whole 4 losses ahead of Ham at the same time he was being dogged. Instead won 10 of next 12 and moved to something like 10 games over 0.500. You just never heard it because guys aren't even watching games of the coaches they are supposed to be commenting on. Lakers were 9-1 before the Luka trade and the trajectory was trending up for like a whole month. Even the top rated defense thing started way back during that stretch.
TLDR JJ peaked before the Luka trade and it's sad his success pre-deadline will probably now be written out of the history books.

That narrative died way before the trade.

Ham lost the team early after they found out he was nothing but a vibe and cheerleader.

People fall in love and out of love with coaches in the NBA so easily it's funny to me. JJ led the Lakers to 28-19 prior to the Luka trade.
Around what Ham was giving the Lakers before he was fired. You are talking being on pace to finish with 48 wins instead of 47. Now that Luka is there he looks like a genius but is the difference JJ or the lakers making an extremely lopsided trade?

The Laker's record last year after 71 game is 39-32. Finished that season with a 47-35 record.
The Laker's current record after 71 game is 43-28...a 4 game improvement thus far.
The Lakers last 11 game will be critical with 7 of those team having a winning record(>.500). Lets see if we truly owe Darvin Ham an apology and settle this once and for all. Anyone wants to take a stab and predict the Lakers record at the end of the season will be? I think they will finish 49-33 and Darvin Ham will be an after thought.

Not to defend Darvin Hamas as a coach but this is clearly taken out of context. He said "... So we don't have to give second or third efforts" at the end, as in he's criticizing his teams defensive effort and comparing it to the effort of a team that already knew what plays the offense was going to run. Not the most intellectual thing spoken by a coach but not as bad as it's made out to be

After playing Denver, Malone talks about how well JJ planned.
After playing Houston, their fans talk about JJ out-coaching Udoka.
Most Lakers fans now and the Lakers players fully buy into JJ and the coaching staff knowing they can plan and prepare the team against almost anyone. God, am I glad I dont have to see Ham's hand in pocket stance ever again!! Or Ham not calling any timeout when the other team scores 15 in a row.

Lakers had way more injuries this year than last year. They would have way worse record last year if their starters missed as many games as we missed this year.

Don’t think you understand
99% of Lakers fans that watch the game and truly follow the team know how much of an improvement in scheme, team buy-in that JJ ungraded over Ham. Ham was not a serious HC. He could never lead us to anything great that’s why Mike Malone loved carving up Ham.
Not even close.

He had too many embarrassing quotes like that.
In context, there's nothing wrong here.
He's saying his team wasn't giving 2nd and 3rd effort on defense and essentially playing as if the other coach was telling them what they were going to run, so just playing the first action and not being intense enough on the counters, etc.
I mean I don't think one needs to go out of context just to say the guy wasn't the right coach for the team lol
