Wizards/Magic
WIZARDS
In:Isaak/C.Antonhy/Magic FRP
Out:Poole
Poole's contract expires and he receives a mid-first-round FRP to continue his rebuild.
MAGIC
In:Poole
Out:Isaak/Colesterol/Magic FRP
Poole looks a lot like what they need, a volume scorer (shooting +38% from 3 on +9 attempts)
fits perfectly into the timeline

Re: Wizards/Magic
Looks good to me from the Wizards standpoint. Poole has been good for them and he is well-regarded in the locker room for his work ethic, but I doubt the Wizards intend to keep him beyond his current contract, so turning him into a FRP seems like a wise move for a rebuilding team.

Re: Wizards/Magic
Poole Party is not the type of player the Orlando Magic should target. They are young and inexperienced. They can either ride out KCP or need a CJ McCollum type to help steer the ship, similar to what Gobert in Minnesota and Harris in Detroit did.

Re: Wizards/Magic
Go back a year and WAS would be attaching picks. Poole is having a solid year, but that is still a BIG contract with several more years for a guy that even his biggest fans understand is a bit of a wild card...I'd make it the DEN frp but I'd also be willing to upgrade the players to WAS at the same time. WAS, hopefully, has a great draft and, suddenly, their rebuild is off and running. They have a load of interesting prospects to sort through for a few more years and Poole is just in the way. Picking up AJ Johnson for nothing was just gravy...they've actually gotten too deep at that spot with Bub, etc and probably could thin it out a bit and focus their development. Here's my counter(s)...
ORL sends: Wendell Carter, Cole Anthony, Jett Howard, ORL 25 frp (#15)
WAS sends: Poole, AJ Johnson
*WCJ is a solid player that would complement Sarr and also versatile enough to play next to him with complementary skills. Easy to forget that he's still only 25yo. Cole is actually a great locker room guy and supportive teammate that would pitch in but not get in the way of Bub and the other young guys...he has a TO, so, worst scenario, he's only one year and tradable even if just as an expiring at the TD. Jett is still young but gets no PT in ORL and would get less with guards coming in. He could very easily become a younger, cheaper, more athletic Kispert pretty quickly.
or, if WAS is "attached" to both AJJ AND Bub...
ORL sends: Isaac (salary drops to $15m), Cole (TO/expiring), Jett Howard, DEN 25 frp (#25), ORL 25 srp
WAS sends: Poole
*The pick is a bit of a downgrade, but adding Howard and a srp

Poole last season was arguably the worst player in the NBA; a disaster every minute he was on the floor.
This season he has shot much better (.025 ts% relative to league), played defense considerably better, and continued to work hard in practice and be a good team guy verbally to the younger guys.
How much you value him is based on whether you think the "new" Poole is the norm going forward. Poole this year has been a positive value player even on his contract (which looks better going forward). Certainly a big step up from Cole Anthony this year (-.043 ts% relative to league) for two players that are mainly defined by their scoring.

Re: Wizards/Magic
Pooles contract makes this DOA.
Poole to Orlando would force a name change to Michigan Magic.

The Wizards shipping out AJ or Bub is a non-starter. Totally out of the question.
I think the second counter-offer is reasonable, but I'd politely decline. It's not quite enough for Poole.

Re: Wizards/Magic
I don't think Orlando can afford Poole's contract (without either moving KCP or being more willing to pay luxury taxes than expected).
Even if Orlando were willing to pay the tax bill after the move they wouldn't be adding a mid-1st to make the deal, even the Denver 1st would feel like an overpay. One decent season doesn't completely wipe away the terrible year before it and the contract difference covers the quality difference.

Agreed. Bub and AJ are developing well. Bub alone will probably be at Cole Anthonys level of production or better by next year, and hes only 20.

Re: Wizards/Magic
Yes, Poole had a terrible year, coming from a championship team to one in deep reconstruction, it happens... but we forget that he was an important piece in the championship.
