Congratulations fellas!

And thanks for the thread Zeeb. Much appreciated. I think your its locked comment was just a small misunderstanding. I knew that you basically meant it's over, we got this, kind of thing.
What a season. Now let's make some noise and have some fun in the playoffs babyyyy

I really like Cade and Tobias being able to get some recoup time this last few weeks.

We gotta go full Rodman, full Lindsey Hunter, full Ausar, and full Wallace Bros (leave it all on the court) 48 minutes a game and we will advance to the 2nd round!

It's a nice feeling being back in the playoffs after the last few (more than few actually) seasons of misery. I think if someone had told any of us that we'd be a top 6 (and potentially top 5) seed before the season started we would've thought them insane but here we are.

The last time we won this many games was in 2015/16 - I remember having good vibes of the Drummond/Tobias/Morris/KCP/RJax core at the time but in retrospect it was pretty clear that there were no superstars or even perennial All-Stars, and they were only ever going to max out as a first round playoff team. Our current team feels different - a lot of young hungry guys with a lot of potential to grow. Depending on health and further roster additions we could be looking at >50 game win seasons and deep playoff runs for the next few years.

Hell yeah playoffs we might even win a series. Gotta love seeing Cade develop into the guy we thought he could be.

Hope all is well for everyone. I've been watching but I had to cut off the posting. It was getting to the point of if I wrote "My fav food is a burger" I'd have to argue it for 3 pages. Posting about basketball was a hobby, hobbies are supposed to be fun and chill.

Anyways glad to see the excitement here. I'll still do some lurking from time to time I'm sure. Detrrroiiiitttt Basketball!

You do you.
I have been watching since the 04 championship when I was a teenager. I'm just glad we are back and done rebuilding. This is about to be a coming out party and I wish Ivey was more healthy for it. Thank for the hard work this season on the updates.

Lack of size inside is going to be a massive problem for this team. Jalen Duren just looks small out there at 6’10 compared to the legit 7 foot big men. Pistons needed another 6’11/7 foot big man to play and rotate

It’s not about height at all, though. Stew is 6’8”, but he has long arms, great instincts and is aggressive — he’s messing people up in the paint constantly.

Duren’s problem isn’t his height or his strength. It’s in his head. He’s not Bagley bad, but he doesn’t rotate in time quite frequently. He seems like a heady offensive player for the most part (strong passer, strong cutter, good head for offensive rebounding), so you have to hope he just started so far behind defensively that he’s not where he’s going to get yet.

We need him on offense — he’s one of if not the best lob catcher in the league. Great hands, very good athlete for his size. But yeah, his development as a defender is one of the biggest keys to the Pistons becoming a contender. And if he can’t, well, you’d have to hope Langdon sees that and starts thinking about other options.

EDIT: it’s also very possible all the ankle problems he had last year got in his head. Gotta get over that, can’t play scared.

If it wasn’t a problem they wouldn’t be getting pounded on the boards as bad as they do so often. They are going to get destroyed in the playoffs with the lack of size and rebounding

Sad to tell you, that’s not true, either. The Pistons are +199 in rebounds this year.

We aren’t playing well right now, and yes, we’ve gotten cooked on the boards vs. Memphis and Sacramento. Sabonis, Valanciunas and Edey worked us over, very true. But you’re extrapolating from two games, and it just isn’t true for the season. Duren being dinged up isn’t helping, for sure.

Conclusions about the players now that the year is almost over:

Cade Cunningham: He’s proven he can lead the team, improved his three-point shooting, and is one of the best players in the league—probably in the entire NBA. That worries us a bit when it comes to the salary cap.

Jaden Ivey: He’s made a huge leap, especially with his shooting. A 40% from three is truly incredible. We’ll see how he recovers from this injury, especially if he can make a difference on defense. They probably won’t renew his contract this summer, and he’ll wait until next year.

Tim Hardaway Jr.: A great veteran. He’s provided spacing and has been playing wonderfully. I’d probably renew him with a deal between $7M and $9M per year. His performance could be significant in the playoffs, but don’t expect miracles.

Ausar Thompson: He’s a beast. He’s the best player on the team after Cade. Since he started, the team has reached elite defensive levels. He has a 108.9 defensive rating and has improved his shooting efficiency and true shooting by 5%.

Tobias Harris: Tobias Harris has been a great addition to the team. He brings post play that maybe no one else—besides Cade—has. He’s been a solid veteran and has scored efficiently, especially since the All-Star break.

Jalen Duren: He started the season badly—really badly. But he’s improved drastically, made major strides, and is essential for Cade when it comes to creating space in the paint for plays, thanks to his above-the-rim athleticism. We’ll have to see if he can take another step defensively and be more consistent. If so, he could be one of the best in the league. He’ll likely be offered a contract extension (between $100M and $120M over four years). He’s only 21, and the playoffs could increase or decrease that figure.

Malik Beasley: A breath of fresh air for the city and franchise. He’s repeatedly said he loves Detroit and has given everything for the team. Trajan is a great pickup, and I hope he lands a three-year, $50M deal using the MLE. That’ll depend on earlier trades, though—there aren’t many teams who can offer him more. A historic season.

Stewart: He’s sacrificed for the team and provided incredible defensive value. He faces some tough matchups because of his height, but in others, he’s extremely useful as a center. I think we should try to sign a third center like Drummond for his size—sometimes we come up short. Duren also isn’t 7 feet tall (and neither is Andre, I believe). He has an important contract ahead of him and is a steal.

Ron Holland II: He surprised me a lot. He wasn’t my first pick in the draft (I liked Cody Williams), but the kid has the legs to defend, seems like he can handle the ball a bit, he’s a menace in transition, and his shot doesn’t look too bad. If he improves his shooting, he and Ausar will be scary. Still has a lot of room to grow.

Fontecchio: The Italian puts in a lot of effort, defends well, and rebounds well. But his shooting has dropped drastically this year, and he’s often very poor with the ball on offense. His decision-making isn’t great either. I wouldn’t be surprised if he stays, but also wouldn’t be surprised if he gets moved in a trade.

Sasser: A good player, a scoring machine, but not a point guard. He lacks finishing ability at the rim and can’t really create plays. He’s a shooting guard in a point guard’s body. I think the team might try to get something for him, maybe packaged with Fontecchio, perhaps to look for a backup 4.

Dennis Schroder: A great addition. A really good one. He’s not comfortable starting or playing big minutes. His role as a natural point guard is crucial because this team doesn’t have one—Ivey, Cade, and Sasser are not true point guards. He is. He takes care of the ball and runs the second unit perfectly. I’d keep him with a similar contract—$7M to $10M.

Paul Reed: I don’t think he’s done badly, but as I said before, I’d be looking for a third 7-footer center who could help us occasionally.

Waters: As a backup point guard, he’s great.

BoBy Klitman: Remember who his agent is, and that’s why he’s here. His season has been very, very disappointing. He’s a smart kid, capable of a lot on the court, but he turns the ball over a lot (over 3 per game) and shoots just 30% from three.

Best regards—let’s use these games to help the guys find rhythm and hopefully win at least one playoff game. It’s been a FANTASTIC season.

I don't see how his salary situation could have been avoided or any other scenario that would have been more preferable.

- We have a guy who earned a max extension so we paid him accordingly.
- In all standard extensions there are clauses that increase the value of contracts if they win accolades such as making the all-nba team.
- Cade earned being on the all-nba team this year so those clauses kicked in and we have to pay him such.

Would you have preferred it had he not played up to those standards so we could pay him less?

I guess another way of stating this is that I consider paying the value of a max with an all-nba kicker as money well-spent since those dollars are rightfully earned. Especially given that it's very likely Cade will still get better and be more valuable than what he can be paid there.

If we spend all of our salary on players who are actually earning or out-earning their contracts then that's a great, great problem to have.
