Mavs/Lakers new try.. Lively/Reaves

Post#1 » by Astaluego » Thu Apr 3, 2025 12:32 pm

The Mavs and Lakers didn't finish the job and left their rosters a bit unbalanced...
A. Reaves for Lively/Hardy/O-Max

The Mavs are at their best with AD playing the 5, being much more versatile, and they still have Gafford, who is good enough to both play alongside AD and back him up. They get an all-star level playmaker/scorer who can play alongside KI when he returns from injury.

Lakers must build around Luka, Reaves is very good, but he will always be a defensive problem alongside Luka when facing elite teams. Here they get a running mate for Luka who is already known to fit perfectly, before having to pay Reaves.

I proposed something similar, but I regret it, I'd keep Lively, it's hard to put a value on him.
Lively is the better player, but his injuries are a concern, I can't really decide.

Reaves being an expiring makes me pass here.

I don’t know if it’s even a good trade for Dallas or if Lively’s value has rightfully dropped this season.

But I’d still rather keep the locked up player with a really high ceiling im.

yeah the inability to extend Reaves as part of the trade just makes this really tough for Dallas. Because there will be cap space teams in 26 and he will be a popular target.

I know Derek Lively is already developing a injury history, which is scary for big men, which I fully understand trading him because of that. Also because of injuries, his value right now is relatively low. With that however, there's no reason for the Mavericks to just hand away Lively to the Lakers for nothing of value. If Derek Lively current value is really worth just a meh expiring contract, then I rather just see the Mavericks not trade him at all and just hope he can stay healthy for extends of time and then trade him after if need be.

I like Collins, but he doesn't solve any defensive problems for the Lakers.
prefer to convert Vandervilt/Maxi/Knecht into Claxton

I think the Mavs build around Lively now. The injury history just makes it easier to extend Lively to reasonable terms.

Reaves do not look good as franchise player at all. This is kinda like building around Harrison Barnes and Nico.

Do you think so? I thought the idea was to build a winning team now around AD (KI when he returns)... personally I would prefer your idea and trade AD to HOUSTON for a rebuilding package with prospects + Picks. Shepard/Green/J.Smith + this year's FRP, works for me.

Lively is a foundational piece but he isn't a player you build around with purpose.

The fact that Mavs didnt get Reaves as part of Doncic trade is still mind-boggling. Any other GM(if forced to trade Luka) would get Reaves, and Knecht and one 1st rounder on top of what they already got.
