This is a good point, and raises another.
"Empty stats."
What does that generally mean?
It implies crappy scoring, primarily volume, without much impact on offense. A "someone's gotta take the shots" kind of deal, and in a manner which wouldn't occur on a better team. Same same, it might indicate someone really chasing numbers, taking rebounds from teammates and such, all in a way which has diminishing returns.
Giddey isn't presently playing a role he couldn't on a better team. You put him with a big or an off-ball guy or whatever, and he can merrily chug along, so long as he maintains competent 3pt shooting as he has all season this year. He might not manage 11 rpg or whatever, but he'll still be killing it.
And for the past 23 games (22 starts), he's averaging 19.7 ppg, 9.2 rpg and 8.0 apg on 48.4 / 45.5 / 79.2.
Post ASB, so 17 games and 16 starts, 20.6 / 10.5 / 9.3, 49.2 / 46.4 / 79.8, on 61.0% TS.
The 3pt shooting is going to settle, of course, but he was shooting 34.5% even before the break. He was rough in NOV/DEC but otherwise has been shooting reasonably well all year beyond the arc.
It's still a quarter of a season, so we'll have to see what next year looks like. Short sample, tanking teams all around, etc, etc, but it's interesting to watch. We'll see if he can keep it up and have that correlate with Chicago winning.
