A SMALL SEASON REVIEW:

https://www.espn.com/nba/team/schedule/_/name/por/season/2025

The Blazers definitely took this year to develop its roster more, but there’s a lot to like about this season even if the ceiling for performance was still a bit away. There were good wins throughout the year for sure. Shaedon Sharpe, Toumani Camara, Scoot Henderson, and Deni Avdija all had pretty nice seasons with huge contributions across the season. Avdija being on a very team-friendly descending contract, was acquired from Washington. (Author’s note: I was very shocked at this trade and still value Deni quite high, his play this year hasn’t changed that one bit.) He had a great year and huge moments. There's a positive trend for Portland for me, they have received some nice contributions from younger players and the cap table isn't as daunting as I first through before writing this.

If it were not for a deep hole to climb out of in mid-late December, the Blazers might actually have been right there in the play-in games. Ayton and Grant also suffered some injury set-backs this year. Though we have panned Ayton’s play before, he’s actually averaged a double-double this year in 40 games played. Grant only managed 47, so a lot of lifting was performed by younger players up and down the roster. With a full year of both they will surely help Portland compete for play-in or better territory.

Camara was a huge plus every time I watched the Blazers. He improved in many facets this year and seems to be a piece Portland will want to keep around for defense, but his shot is nice too. Simons, Ayton, and Grant’s contracts expire or end soon, so the Blazers have a chances to retool its roster very quickly. I can envision teams’ taking on one-year of Simons or Ayton (maybe 2 different teams) for a one-year championship burst. Grant should still hold some trade value, too, as it is just two years left on his deal after this season ends.

Clingan, the rookie, averaged 6p/7r/1.6b in over 60 games and surely will be featured more. The Blazers pick is Lottery protected and goes to Chicago, but POR landed in the Lottery to retain it.

In Janurary/Feb the Blazers won 10 wins in 11 games, the only loss to OKC in that frame. That type of play bodes well for the future, and with their own pick, there’s another chance to add a key piece to the roster. I think after some of the big salary is cleared this team will be well positioned to contend with improvement internally. How do you see the Blazers future and how they performed this year ? Any thoughts on the bevy of young talent ? Where should they target in the near future to return to top-4 or better in the West ?
Cheers

Eliminated after a win, sad. That said, one of the most exiting young teams in a league, I am a fan. Hope they draft someone very good.

Hope they get Flagg. They deserve him for the effort they put in this season.

Trade Robert Williams III and let Reath be the third center. Give Scoot the keys and put Simons on the bench or trade. Hope for lotto luck.

I don't actually know what to think if they get the #1 pick. Camara and Deni are a really excellent forward combination (and Grant should not be starting over them at this stage). Heck, if by the Gods they did get Flagg, I think I would just start all three next to Clingan/Ayton and say Scoot, you better average 10 assists with these monsters on the wing.

Front office and Chauncey need to get on the same page from Game 1 (or Billups probably needs to go). I expect them in the play-in next year, health permitting.

Very exciting team. Unless they experience some unexpected regression they should be a top-8 team in the west next year. Deni is a two-way beast who is still improving - if he cuts down on turnovers and can shoot 3s in the high 30s/low 40s for an entire season, he becomes an All-NBA guy. Camara can become a perennial all-defense guy. Scoot and Shae are primed to make leaps. Clingan is a serious deterrent in the paint. Even Ayton was motivated and playing really well before he went down with the injury. They just need to stay the course and keep improving and they can be the next Houston.

One focus for pretty much everyone on the roster over the summer should be working on their 3pt shooting. The Blazers should hire the best shooting coaches and assign them to work with the entire roster. If they can make a jump in that area they are a VERY dangerous team next season imo.

Front office: Blazers fans in general want Jody to sell the team. As for Cronin, I have strongly disagreed with his approach to the season. I like the moves he makes, but hate the moves he doesn't make. Blazers are missing a star, so it was the wrong direction to try to win with this team. Should have sent out Simons and Grant last summer, then had G-Leaguers and way over the hill vets back up our starters and players meant to remain on the team in the future. Now, I think the team is in a weird limbo. We are missing out on tanking in a strong draft, so tanking next season feels like we wasted the year, but I also don't think the team is good enough yet to make a real push either. I guess the plan is to either get lucky in the lottery/draft, or make a big trade with upcoming picks/assets. If neither of those happen, this team will top out as a treadmill team. Part of me wants Cronin fired for failure of a smart direction and not seeing the importance of addition by subtraction, but he may unfortunately be the guy for making eventual moves for improvement if the direction is towards winning. I sure hope he knows what he is doing. I just think it will take a ton of luck at this point.

Head coach: I'm not a fan of Billups, but I do think the team eventually overachieved. I think they keep him, but I'd rather they go for Taylor Jenkins.

I voted improving team, but as I mentioned above, I think they will top out as a treadmill team without some crazy draft luck or a big trade. This roster can improve to be a playoff team, but I don't see a star that makes them a championship competitor. Hopefully Bucks crash at the right time and we can swap picks and get a high pick that becomes a star or becomes an enticing trade piece.

Yeah the Avdija acquistion really made a difference for this team. Sharpe is showing signs but still inefficient, still an intriguing player. I'm a big fan of Clingan.

The best young team in the league.
The Hornets should take notes how to rebuild within 2-3 seasons.

So far not a single a-hole on a poll, not a single Treadmill/declining vote I mean.

Best young teams are still Houston and OKC, out of non play off teams, yeah, they are the best young team.

Though I did indicate that I predict they become a treadmill team after a bit more improvement.

Blazers look like they have a pretty bright future ahead. Trade Ayton/Grant/Simons/Williams and get some talent back and they could be back in the playoff hunt very soon

Cronin just signed an extension, so he's going nowhere.

Really interesting end. I think they are building an intriguing team. I'm suspicious of these crazy late season runs but Deni Avidja looks really good. Scoot's improvement is also really encouraging. Sharpe had a smaller jump but he still showed improvement across the board.

They're not a treadmill team only because they haven't quite climbed on it yet. Low ceiling unless they luck into a top-two pick. Deni will be gone before this team plays meaningful games beyond April. Scoot and Sharpe have not earned, but will get, giant extensions. Hell, they'll probably bring back Ayton and Simons too.

Cronin extension:

I remember most people saying Billups would be the first coach fired this season.

If this team played as well they did the second half of the season the first half they would be in the playoff scrum right now, they had a better record the second half despite having a tougher schedule overall.

The Blazers are moving the right direction, the only change I personally want is a new head coach Billups is getting better as time passes but the right coach could really unlock the full potential of this team. The Blazers have been one of the best defensive teams in the entire NBA over the last 41 games of the season, and this was primarily from the addition of Clingan, Avdija, and the further development of arguably the best defender in the NBA Toumani.

The biggest problem for this team is having a consistent scoring threat, that would take this team to the next level.

He was 100% gone if this season they won another 25 games or something, he has a small chance now to be brought back I still feel they will move on.
