I've been a Cronin defender, but this puts me in camp "Cronin is a moron". Wake me up with Jody sells the team.

I will stand up for PJ. Never really liked the guy. But he had the unfortunate situation of replacing Adelman, who is a hall of fame tier coach. Why did Adelman get fired? Because that 90-92 era core aged and didn't play at their 90-92 peak. Add to that things like trading Dražen Petrović so you had no talent pipeline, and you can see how a rebuild was needed. But you look at PJ's rosters, and you go - yeah, that was an average coach doing average things with average players.
Stotts will go down historically underrated. Seriously break down a starting lineup of Dame/CJ/Harkless/Aminu/Nurkic. And that was its best form. You had lineups like Dame/CJ/Turner/Aminu/Kanter. What exactly are you expecting? Certainly not a western conference playoff appearance.
But, GMs fire coaches to buy time to temporarily save their asses. Happens in all types of businesses.

Taking into account the talent Billups has had to work with. I rate him an average coach, with plenty of room to develop.
We have had better and worse head coaches. All of the worse coaches were great people (except one), but, could not think on their feet during a game, and or, lost the players.
My vote for worst Blazer head coach of all time is PJ Carlesimo. He is so far down the list, he would need to jump up to touch bottom. PJ lost some of the players during his first practice session with them.

Re: Chauncey Billups has his contract extended!
Lol, PJ was a waaaaay better coach than Cheeks.
I tend to fall into the camp of W/L is more about roster talent than coaching, but the Blazers have been lucky to have some pretty good ones over the years. Ramsey and Adelman were great coaches, but guys like "the mechanic" Dunleavy and Mike Schuler were also pretty damn good.
I'd put Stotts and PJ on about the same level for different reasons. Stotts was good at implementing a system that played to roster strengths. PJ was just an all around good Xs and Os guy.
I'd put McMillan a tier above Chauncey. Nate's downfall was he was just too damn inflexible and predictable. Billups is just straight up "meh" at Xs and Os, awful at end-game management, and can't implement an offensive system that reflects his roster's length and athletic ability.

Does Billups get the credit for the improvement shown by Deni, Camara and some of the other young players?

Well, Grant being a complete dud, Simons and Ayton getting hurt deserve a lot of credit.
Billups did allow Deni to play to his strengths, so I'll give him that.
Hard to say with Scoot...some of us wanted more minutes for him, but he folded in that role in his first year. So, who knows. Maybe a slower role is actually beneficial for Scoot.
Camara has thrived under the defense-first Billups.

I think Deni was mostly there already. He's improved a bit from last season but his late season run is comparable to late last season with the wizards and if anything chauncey hampered him at early when he took him off the bench for jerami grant. I suppose one could say Shaedon Sharpe, toumani, and clingan were "developed" by chauncey but it's hard to say how much is the head coach vs the assistants.

These guys are top tier BS artists. The spin and the cope is wild... I would expect nothing less. Olshey would be proud.
Quick is the only local media with any integrity to ask real questions, and then they shut it down as soon as he asks about Jody selling LOL.

The Blazers defense was #3 in the NBA during the 2nd half of the season. That's pretty good.

Wake me when we hire Mike Malone.
That was NEVER going to happen. Malone will likely hold out for a job where that has a better core and bigger market.
People need to remind themselves that there's a reason why big name free agents don't come here and that includes coaches. There's a reason why Dame didn't get voted in to start his first all-star game until after he left Portland. Small market west coast teams have a major bias against them. It sucks, but that's a reality.
The only coaches Portland at this moment are ones that are looking for anyone to hire them. Experienced coaches with success had just as much of a chance coming here as Luka signing a free agent contract with us. It's just not going to happen.
I also think Malone would have been an awful coach for this team. Honestly would have been better to do what they did with keeping Billups than getting a red ass like Malone who’s gonna have his team hating him by December.

I agree with most of your points, however, I come to a different opinion about PJs ranking
PJ was good at Xs snd Os. Better than Cheeks. However there is much more to coaching. PJ was a disaster on the human side. He had savvy vets that knew the game, and, each Blazer players strengths and weaknesses . PJ refused to listen to his players.
Maybe calling PJ an NBA coach is a stretch. His real title should have been dictator. HIS style does not work in the NBA.

To be fair Cheeks was hurt by the front office not having his back with some of the Jail Blazers ( the incident with Bonzi Wells was especially egregious). He was probably too nice anyways but the front office didn't help. Also Cheeks has one of the most legendary moments in Blazer history with his helping Natalie Gilbert sing the national anthem.

It'll be interesting to see if Hurley ends up actually going to Denver. I can't think of a bigger dictator than Hurl...
I agree mostly about PJ's personality with the players. That was probably his downside. The same way Stotts couldn't design and implement a good defense to save his life...both had their downsides.

Has any team in NBA history retained a losing head coach after 4 years? Especially one with a 35% winning percentage?
That was me. I asked chat GPT what the record was most losing seasons in a row by a head coach, and it came back with 4. Once Tim Floyd (Bulls) and Bill Fitch (Clippers), and neither got a 5th year. Though looking at Fitch's career, I see he had 5 in a row with the Cavs in the 70s. They kept him on a 9 year tenure.
So it looks like it did happen once.
The NFL is even less forgiving, with the record being 2.5 seasons.

I find the logic of rooting for tanking losses and at the same time upset with Chauncey with the tanking losses fascinating.
