24/25 Grade Masai/Bobby

Post#1 » by djsunyc » Mon Apr 14, 2025 1:09 pm

major moves:

max extension to barnes

extension to quickley

picking up darko's option

trading into draft to get shead and chomche

drafting jakobe and mogbo, signing battle

acquiring ingram

trading davion for 2nd round pick

set season as development and ending up with top 10 lotto pick

grade masai/bobby from 1 to 10 (10 being the best)

I went 7.

They killed the draft, great picks
They had to max extend Barnes, wasn't an option there.
I'm iffy on the Ingram trade, I see the pros and cons. Counting on an injury prone Ingram is risky

Sort of a development year both from players and a roster construction standpoint.

I Am rather negative.

The Decision to tank as awful one and wont yield the results everybody dreams of.

We could easily be in the Play-In and give those guys valuable experience that only helps. Those highpressure games arent that many to pass up on them.

But instead this team lost a whole season of creating chemistry and development (i havent seen much, Rookies are a seperate case).
The lack of playing time together does bother me.
The only positives i have are the rookies that are better than advertised.

Also the Trade for BI was in my view a bad one, because of the injury risk. I really hope i am wrong on that.

Also the Decisions going forward arent easy one

- extending Poeltl or trading him or make sure he picks up the option, failing to do so on all 3 things isnt wise
- Keeping the team or trade one of the core guys (RJ most likely)?
- What is the timetable moving forward. Playoffs is a given next year, but is it enough to convince anybody of the core?
- Doing the unimaginable and trade scottie? (he simply doesnt deliver what we expected him to do)
- What about the bench, are we done yet?

Worst case:

Next year will be the same as this year, meaning this team isnt worth building.

What then?

Is there a plan in place if it doesnt work out?

Will it be time to make a firesale as noone is worth keeping longterm?

8 -
Great draft considering how bad this draft was suppose to be;
Converted Jalen McDaniels into 3x SRPs
And while next year may prove me wrong, I think the Ingram trade was a heist.

Lets see what he does with pick 7ish.

7

They absolutely killed it in the draft. Found 3 rotation players which is amazing.

When it comes to roster construction, they've left us with roster flexibility and tradable contracts/assets. I wish they tanked a little harder sooner but I can't be mad overall. If we jump into the top 3 of this draft then their grade is a 9/10

Went with 7.
Did well in the weak draft.
I see the vision with the BI trade. And good for them for re-signing him and actually holding him out until next season.
Ended the season with a top 10 pick. Just wish they tried harder to tank. But it is what it is. Still can't believe Magic lost to a tanking team TWICE. Felt like it was harder to lose than win this year in the East.

*edit. went 7, but probably should've been 8.

that's fair.

in regards to the BI trade, it's asset management. if we didnt flip bruce and davion then the expiring contract avenue to add talent would not exist next season and/or it would require moving a starter.

I voted a 9.

I was hoping that they wouldn't pick up Bruce, and I was slightly disappointed in the size of the KO extension. I wanted them to use the space to sign free agents.

I'd much prefer BI vs the FA that we would have been able to get last summer. Big win here.

2014 Draft was one of the better Raps drafts for depths ever, probably second to 2016.

Still managed to get 7th best odds in a tank.

Contracts weren't even on the table, what were we supposed to NOT sign Barnes to a max?

I'm at 8 atm. A lot will depend on how BI looks next year. It could look amazing, it could look pretty bad. At time of deal and extension I felt it was a very good gamble. A little more concerned about his health now than then.

5.5
[2/2] Draft is good (Walter, Mogbo, Shead, Battle, Chomche)
[1/2] Re-sign is average, and feel a bit overpaid (Barnes, Quickley)
[1.5/4] Development is slightly disappointed, outside of Barrett (better passer), Agbaji and Shead (3 point shooting) took a leap, others are less impactful on their development.
[1/2] Trade is average, had a hard time trading away Brown, ended up with Ingram that we packaged Olynky bad contract with a non lottery 1st.
[1/2] Salary is average, pretty much we are going to be a tax team with our 1st round pick.

Giving development a failing score doesn't make much sense.

Shead, Walter, Mogbo, Battle - all impressed as rookies and got better as the season went on.

Ochai took a leap. RJ had his best season. IQ looked better as a playmaking guard and was great after coming back.

Lawson and Rhoden went through the 905 development program and made massive strides. E.g., AJ's 3pt scoring improved significantly.

Gradey also took a leap, even though his defense remains a work in progress.

Honestly, the only guy that disappointed me this season was Scottie. But even he got better defensively.

Shouldn't this be done after the draft lottery?

I mean, not even the biggest Masai bashers would rate worse than 7 if we land #1 pick overall

Was thinking between 7-8, so 7.5? Think they've done a solid job of adding lots of usable depth/building out the bench and getting Ingram for vets and a first is potentially a big win. Think there's still work to be done in terms of further consdolidating the roster and I think we still lack a bonafide #1 cornerstone type of player but they have the assets now to potentially get that guy if necessary.

yeah 7-8.

they struck gold this draft class in managing to find capable rotational players, 1st round, 2x 2nd round, unsigned

and maybe some other potential players from their 2-way/10 day contract signings near the end of the season.

even the ingram trade I didn't mind at all, especially considering what we gave up for him. which essentially hinges on whether Haliburton can stay healthy or not.

Im not big on scale systems, but I think a 7 is about fair. Nothing monumental, but we got some assets from the draft. I like the low cost BI move, and can see ways it improves the roster and acts as a ballast we need as a ISO scorer/facilitator. It also leverages the USG and roles of guys miscast, into better roles in the future, ideally. The emergence of Agbaji as a 3+D.

I think alot could change the next few offseasons, but we are building up an asset base and this was a good step.
