Pelicans Expected To Hire Joe Dumars As Lead Basketball Exec

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Apr 14, 2025 6:23 pm

The New Orleans Pelicans are expected to hire Joe Dumars as their lead basketball executive to replace David Griffin. Dumars is currently head of basketball operations in the NBA's league office.

Dumars and the Pelicans are expected to engage in serious conversations to finalize a deal by the end of the week. Dumars is a native of Louisiana.

Dumars was the Detroit Pistons' lead basketball executive from 2000 until 2014, winning a championship in 2004. Dumars also served in a number of capacities with the Sacramento Kings from 2019 until 2022.

I feel like his previous tenure with Detroit wasn’t good.

He blew so many draft picks. Darko Milicic over Carmelo and Wade. Drafting Mateen Cleaves in 2000. Then Rodney White, 9th overall ins 2001, everyone in Detroit wanted Zach Randolph. Rodney Stucky was another awful pick. He trade Billups to bring Iverson to Detroit. Iverson had no shooters around him and an awful first year head coach in Michael Curry (another bad Dumars decision). That team was awful and Iverson’s career further tarnished.

The picks he did hit on, he never played and let them go on to contribute on other teams, like Caldwell-Pope, Aaron Afflalo, Spencer Dinwiddie, Chris Middleton, and I’m sure there are others that aren’t coming to mind.

Maybe in these last 10 years he has a fresher perspective than he did when he left us.

That's about all I'd hold onto if I were a Pels fan with this news. That maybe he'll be different.

Just move them to Seattle. Zion and the WHO are a match made in heaven.

Sure New Orleans isn't the most desirable market in the NBA but damn didn't even try to reach out to other candidates seems weird.

I'd bet they were tampering before they even fired Griffin.

Yeah, that's another good example. Letting him walk in free agency was so stupid.

Well you're cherry picking. He assembled the entire starting 5 of those great Pistons teams that won 1 chip, went to 2 Finals & 6 ECF.

S&T Grant Hill for Ben Wallace
Drafted Prince
Signed Billups
Traded Stackhouse for Hamilton
Traded garbage for Rasheed Wallace

(also drafted Okur 38th overall)

He definitely made some horrible moves, but that Pistons team from 2004-2008 is the best team assembled without a true top 5 player ever in my opinion. I think those teams were better than the current Celtics or Cavs. Give the man some credit.
