2024-2025 Sixers Season Post modem (Exit Interview and Pre-Offseason Thread)

Post#1 » by Mik317 » Mon Apr 14, 2025 6:59 pm

This dreadful ass season is finally over. I can't think of a season this bad in my sixers watching "career' and I sat through the Eddie Jordan Jason Kapono at the 5 season ffs. I checked out of this one...and that sucks. Part of that is some life **** but still.

So where do we go from here? Everything kinda relies on the lottery....and after this season from hell, the most likely outcome would be Silver finding that we sat Grimes out of a game and punishing us to immediately fall to 7 and give away our pick...that becomes a superstar or is used in a superstar trade and idiot fans outside use that to troll us. But luckily I have pre-emptively decided that the middle of the lottery actually sucks so thus I totally won't lose my **** if we lose the pick...so there (this is a lie).

Some takeaways from the exit interviews. Morey and Nurse gets a free pass it seems from ownership. IDK if that is the correct move but I get it...don't want to pay multiple coaches and GM. Morey said all the right things tho. Get younger and more athletic and actually try to be good in the regular season instead of thinking you can just flip a switch for the playoffs because of "experience".... so there is that. Nurse needs to have actual ideas for next season imo....think he still may get the hook tho. The Ricky brought it up but Morey's **** rep also may begin to hurt us...but if we keep the pick I want him here for it as that seems to be where he is still actually good.

Maxey seems to be trying to take on that leadership role; we will see if it works. I could see him surprisingly asking out if things don't change actually. Klutch be Klutchin' (to be that guy I don't think he was too jazzed by McCain taking some shine early on but that could just be him being frustrated as hell from the bad start but didn't like his body language during McCain's hot streak). Think PG also looks for an out closer to home...just never looked like he wanted to be here. Suns is my current guess or maybe the Warriors somehow IDK. Send his ass to Utah lol...he likes Fishing..they got lakes and ****.

Oubre's comment can be taken as a good or a bad thing. Sound like he either wants to come back or wants to get back the old chucker him idk. Lowry wants back...pls no. Drummond would be stupid to not take his option but also pls no. Grimes giving the "its a business" answer means he wants to get paid and while CURRENTLY no one but the Nets can, **** changes.

Then there is the big oaf; I really wish he would have a sit down with someone and actually talk it out...this mysterious gimmick doesn't work for him. Being AWOL is the constant problem. I get it...your body is failing you and that must suck ass (even if some of it is legit all your fault for not taking your fitness seriously); then you have dopes talking about your son and dead brother and then even the city has begun to "turn" on you. BUT idk havign everything come out about you come from "sources" doesn't help. I hope his mentals are fine and his health in general. Hopefully this is the same as Kawhii and actual rest time off helps...but even in the best case scenario, he is going to need to change. Become a much better shooter from deep, that will cut out the iso and grifting and help the knees and allow you to get back on defense and also not have to run the break. But that starts with him.

BUT again the lottery holds all the keys really....

oh boy.

If we can get Flagg, then all of the issues that plague this team goes away. He can play with Embiid, he can become the new face of the team with the young guys. He can DEFINITELY help next year. Just desperately need us to land that pick.

Yes, we desperately need to land this pick. Even if it's not Flagg, I'm still going to believe that we'll draft a really good player.
I hope Embiid can come back strong. If he can, we're going to be ok. I think we have enough to work with as is.
Paul George either needs to go all in with this team or we need to find a taker. I'd prefer we just trade him. If the Durant rumblings are true, would do a George for KD swap. Once again I'd rather not go that route, but it is what it is. We're stuck with George until something gives. The best hope is for him to come back strong next season and just be there...Show up my guy, be a model of stability as you advance into your golden years. Elton Brand did it for us and he was actually able to save face by doing so.
Back to the draft...If...Huge if...We get Flagg or Harper, we're set for the next ten years. Those are the two superstars of the draft. After that, I see some damn fine talent in picks 3 through 8.
I don't think the ship is burning just yet, but Moby Dick straight up crashed into it and did a ton of damage this year. If we miss out on the pick and Embiid is slow to recover, then it may be time to clear the decks which would start a likely five year rebuild.
Quinton Grimes is right. This is a business. He is also nowhere near worth what he thinks he is. He scored a lot of points on a team that won 2 out of 30 games with him starting and leading the way. I say we make him an offer and he either takes it or leaves it. I do believe Jared McCain can do all the things that Grimes can do.

Posted this in another thread but I don’t think very much relies on the lotto. If we get Flagg, sure, but that’s a 1/10 chance and way way less likely than us landing some other pick who won’t be a star any time soon.

Barring Flagg, we’re just in a holding pattern. Too deep into Embiid/PG to bail on them (cuz team plan/investment) or get out from them and reset (cuz contracts).

Having a young nice prospect makes them suck less to watch, and having a big trade chip makes the upside of our current Embiid/PG play more exciting, but for now either seems deeply secondary to the big boring health questions.

Agree about Grimes. Hes a nice player, and can be a good backcourt mate to Maxey, but i wouldnt pay him more than 10-12k mil per year. He scored a lot because we had nobody and if we lose our pick we will probably start our rebuild next year, since i think Embiid is done as a impactful player, baring a miracle.

This pick is really important for us, we are on the brink of the end of This sixers iteration...

This might be the most disappointing season ever when it comes to expectations versus reality.

I hope next season ends up being the most fun in terms of expectations versus reality, just to balance things out.

The lottery doesn't really change next season. It just changes our medium term plan.

If we get Flagg, we are golden forever. We compete immediately with Maxey, McCain, Flagg, PG, Embiid. We suffer a couple of mediocre years waiting to get off of the PG, Embiid contracts. And by then we're into the primes of Maxey, McCain, Flagg and then we compete again once those contracts are gone and we can afford a bench. Flagg gives us a plan for a decade - as long we don't screw things up along the way. Like trading away the house just to get through that one terrible year of the PG and Embiid contracts. Then instead of suffering through 1 or 2 mediocre years, we get 1 or 2 decent (not championship) years, but followed by the rest of the decade remaining decent but never have enough to get the bench Maxey/McCain/Flagg would need.

If we get somebody else or get nobody, then we compete immediately with Maxey, McCain, ???, PG, Embiid. We'd be better with Flagg, of course, but for next year we are going to run it back regardless. Then we have PG and Embiid for another couple of years. If we don't get Flagg, then after next year is when we would debate totally blowing things up. Find out what we have from the draft, evaluate Maxey and McCain's long-term prospects, evaluate PG and Embiid's health and likelihood of contributing to rings, and if we don't have a core that can compete for a championship then we are into Process 2.0. Most likely, we don't call it that and we pretend we're competing or "going young", but everything goes out the door except whichever of Maxey/McCain looks like he has the best chance to be a championship caliber #2 on our desired timeline. And then we hope for a #1 to come into the org somehow.

Agree on the reality, but not the expectations. It went south way faster than I thought it would, as I was expecting a slow death rather than the sudden cardiac arrest that we got. But to me it was fantasy to believe that this could have resulted in anything more than a second round exit in the most wildly optimistic scenario followed by a gradual demise. Actually, this might have been the best way, to just get it done.

Land Flagg:

McCain
Maxey
PG
Flagg
Embiid

Huge size in the frontcourt with massive talent; smaller in the backcourt similar to Portland's Lillard & McCollum. A lot riding on Embiid here, however:

McCain
Maxey
PG
Flagg
Bona

This lineup would actually be the catalyst to move on from Embiid if he's not ready, I believe. I'm not sure Embiid has the capacity to do what Duncan did late career and not be the center of the Sixers universe. The offensive movement would be better. Flagg is excellent at throwing lob dunks to the C in the dunker spot (watch him and Maluach connection). I'm not saying Bona is the future at C, but it will change the thinking of this team moving forward.

Land Harper:

Maxey
Grimes
Harper
PG
Embiid

Smaller lineup but still massively talented, no real defensive liabilities and a ton of shooting. I wonder how long Harper would be an off ball guy deferring to Maxey even though Harper is probably the more natural initiator.

Otherwise, I'd consider trading from picks 3-6, especially if we have Ace Bailey as an option. Morey has said he's changed his mindset to being younger and we've already put ourselves in a hole with future picks. Would make sense to move later in the lottery and refill the draft capital for future years.

Alternatively, if Zion is available, attaching the pick to PG or Embiid could get the ball rolling on a new era.

If you’re drafting Harper, I think you have to move Maxey for a stud wing, unless McCain completely goes off, but in that case you’d probably prefer to still keep him over Maxey due to age/contract. If you prefer to keep Maxey, I guess a Maxey/Grimes/Harper lineup could work. But now you have no real size. Trade Maxey/PG for Franz/KCP/expirings?

McCain
Grimes
Harper
Wagner
Embiid/Bona

That’s a very, very good young core.
always a jump shot away.

I think irrespective of the lottery, it's going to be run it back either way. Lottery only determines the upside assuming Embiid can play. Championship contender (Flagg), 2nd round (Harper), 1st round (lose pick or draft anyone not named Flagg or Harper).

I'd be willing to trade one risk for another, but if Pels ownership wants off Zion, I don't think they'll be interested in Embiid.

What I think the Pels will do is trade him for filler contracts and a bunch of picks. Thunder, Rockets, Nets come to mind immediately.

Through all the noise, this season was Zion’s best yet and everything is trending upwards with his production, could be a dynasty level buy-low.

I think part of it is the irrelevance of the franchise he plays for. It's no excuse - a professional should be a professional, but maybe an explanation.

I would ship Embiid for him + Olynyk out in a heartbeat, even though I love Joel and everything he's done for this franchise.

And it'll never happen. No one is going to simply take Embiid right now. PG + 3-6 pick for Zion would make more sense for NO.

Nailed it. This year totally sucked but its better to die quick then to slowly bleed out over the 4/5 seasons.

Return to Philadelphia 76ers
