Packers bring in top Canadian college QB for a pre-draft visit

According to 3 Down Nation, a website covering Canadian football, the Green Bay Packers are hosting Wilfrid Laurier quarterback Taylor Elgersma for a pre-draft visit. 3DN also stated that the Packers were present at the University of Buffalo pro day, where the Canadian product participated.

The 6’4”, 216-pound Ontario product spent five years playing college football in Canada due to the 2020 season that was canceled for the Covid pandemic. Elgersma was a three-year starter at the U Sports level.

In 2023, Elgersma was a second-team All-Canadian player after leading the sports in passing yards. In 2024, he took Wilfrid Laurier to their first conference championship since 2005 and actually led the team to their national championship game, the Vanier Cup, where Wilfrid Laurier fell short. Last season, he was a first-team All-Canadian and won the Hec Crighton Trophy, which is equal to Canada’s Heisman Trophy Award.

Following the season, he was invited to the Senior Bowl, making him only the second U Sports player to make the cut for the game. Over his college career, he completed 793 of 1,121 passes (71 percent) for 10,547 yards, 78 touchdowns and 33 interceptions. He also posted 127 carries for 605 yards and 18 touchdowns.

There aren't a lot of QBs in this draft that I'm all that interested in so he atleast seems like an interesting late round flier or udfa target to be QB3/Practice squad guy

They do kinda churn through the QB3's. And with Willis on the roster, QB3 is a lower priority to me than another Long Snapper tryout.

Glad they are taking a closer look at Burch. He’d be an awesome addition to the DL group.

The more mocks I do the more I feel like I'm gonna want to trade significantly down in the first. I think getting an extra third and fifth would go a long way towards filling all three needs at DI, Edge, and CB. Most mocks I do drop off significantly after the top of the third and I'm left with little at the need positions. But an extra 3rd in the top ten of that round tends to do the trick.

I absolutely would love to move back. I don't think there is much of a difference in the talent level from 12-40 in this draft. That said I'm not sure how many guys are going to be willing to move up and offer an extra R3 or R4 pick

I think, like all drafts, it'll depend on how much teams like Dart, Millroe, and Shough. Thankfully it seems like all three have helium heading into the draft. I think if the Packers want to move back they should have some options.

I admit I know only what I read about these guys, but I thought the highlight observation particularly interesting:
Burch, like Nolen, was a transfer from an SEC school. The 23-year-old played his first three years at South Carolina before heading west to Oregon for his final two seasons. After back-to-back seasons with 3 sacks and 8 tackles for loss in 2022 and 2023, his pass-rushing production jumped his senior season, as he put up 8.5 sacks and 11 TFLs, while adding a forced fumble and an impressive six pass breakups. With his size, it’s no surprise that Burch moved inside on many passing situations, giving him some inside-outside versatility that the Packers have used in the past with players like Za’Darius Smith.

That strikes me as not only quick, but also situationally alert.

One of the few players I'd consider trading up for

The reports of him not watching film at all is more then a little concerning. And not just that he doesn't do it. But just how stupid do you have to be to say that leading into the draft

I don't know what it means, but Milroe and Dart getting draft invites and Sanders not getting one is interesting. Other non-invites are Jalon Walker, Barron, Warren, Membou, and Loveland,

Sanders reportedly turned it down

Dane Brugler's 7 round mock in the Athletic:

23. Green Bay Packers: Will Johnson, CB, Michigan
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Johnson go as high as No. 11 to the 49ers, but he might still be on the board in the 20s. He declined to run the 40-yard dash at his pro day and the medicals will be a factor for several teams, but the tape shows a really good football player.

54 Packers Darius Alexander DT Toledo
87 Packers Elic Ayomanor WR Stanford
124 Packers Barryn Sorrell Edge Texas
159 Packers Joe Huber G/C Wisconsin
198 Packers Thomas Fidone II TE Nebraska
237 Packers (from PIT) Jamon Dumas-Johnson LB
250 Packers* Kurtis Rourke QB

Hard to quibble with a mock where we get one of my three favorite players down at 23, but I think the rest of the class is a little uninspiring.

If the board fell that way I'd go:

54 - JT Tuimoloau EDGE
87 - Ashton Gillotte EDGE
124 - JJ Pegues DT
159 - Malachi Moore DB
198 - Dont'e Thornton Jr. WR
237 - Jack Nelson - OL
250 - Kurtis Rourke QB

I like his first 3 picks. Alexander will be an interesting player to follow. He was good at Toledo, dominant at the senior bowl, but is also going to be 25 as a rookie. Hopefully he'll be good right away because he kind of gives me Wyatt, one contract vibes.
