KC had mentioned that Coby will not sign an extension next season and will enter unrestricted FA next summer.

If the Bulls make him a good offer this summer or during next season why can’t he sign an extension? Are they not able to offer him a big contract ? Am I missing something ?

He can sign an extension but won't because he wants more money, and you can only give him a 140% raise. The most the Bulls can offer him right now is 4 years 80M.

Coby is a keeper either way, so I hope at worst we sign and trade him and don't just let him walk for free. Although I do prefer we keep him, but I do find it harder for us to every game he plays at this elite level.

In some ways it's better this way. We'll have a whole year to see who is, before needing to sign him. Sure some team could always bid us up, but we'll have bird rights if he stays/becomes (more) elite.

Coby's best move is to go into free agency. It makes no sense for him to take the Bull's offer no matter what it is. If his agent knows his stuff he knows what teams could use a starting SG. Nobody is going to sign Coby as a PG, nobody is going to give him a big offer to be a 6th man combo guard. That's probably a limited number of teams that he can hope for a bigger offer than the Bulls would make this summer. So wait and if there's a team that makes a solid offer but if Coby likes Chicago enough to stay, he can ask for the same from the Bulls.

It's too soon to have a clue what team would have interest in him for as much as some here seem to value him. The teams that could use a SG right now will change with the draft this summer and again in free agency. Then there's all of next season and the 2026 draft before it's even known who else is going to be on the FA market.

That's the perfect way to cripple your cap space.

If a team has the cap space to sign him then why would they agree to a sign and trade? Why give up assets when there's no reason to?

Because barely anyone has enough outright cap space to sign expensive players these days, so the majority of teams won't just be able to ink Coby to a deal.

But, Coby will be a UFA, so if one of the handful of teams with cap space wants to spend it on him, then you might be out of luck. What you'd really need is either a team without cap space to be willing to pay Coby more than the cap space teams or for Coby to just prefer to go to a non-space team (because most of those teams will be more competitive, or maybe he wants to live in a certain market or whatever), so that he'll play ball.

I wonder if it's possible to show goodwill and give Coby a max 140% extension for as few years as possible that would allow us under the CBA to renegotiate (effectively cancel) the deal asap, like during next season or next summer before FA starts. That way he gets some security and piece of mind and we get effectively a team option for one year???? Just spit balling this as an idea, don't know if it's possible. Coby probably wouldn't want it cause it would mean risking playing for a year on am 18 mil deal, but maybe we could promise under the table that we'll renegotiate something way way bigger if he has anything close to the year he had this year?

I was thinking the same thing - not so much an under the table promise (remember Joe Smith) - but something like the biggest extension that we can give, but with PO on each year and a NTC (and a trade kicker if allowable, if clause waived).

So he takes a 1 year hit, but has security. It not sure what the rules are.

It happens, though. Usually for fairly little in return. Often because the space team with its signings will use all of its space and the order, etc, make a difference.

In every way it’s better this way given White’s inconsistent boom/mid past. And by past I include the literal last 6 months. As well as every year prior.

If he maintains then we will know we are paying him what he is worth, so it’s not a problem of significance. It’s always good to sign a guy to a deal worth less than he is, of course. But it’s never bad to pay a guy what his true value is.

Where you get into the severe downsides is overpaying an enormous contract too early. And that is what we would be staring down with White if he were hitting the market this year.

The timing of Coby’s breakout is one of the few instances of good fortune we can point to over the last number of years.

Sell high.

You can't be a serious team with a backcourt of Giddey and White.

We really should let some other team worry about Coby's next contract. If not, we're just making the same mistake we did with Zach, but worse

Hey at least we have another season to roll the ball with Coby at a discounted price before we decide on his future with this team. We should always be listening to calls for Coby.

I think you can keep him if his next contract is under $25m per, and ideally in the 18-22 range. That is a contract befitting a player who is on the borderline between starter and 6th man scorer with a common skill set. 4/90 wouldn't look fantastic at the beginning, but the second half of the contract would be very solid as the cap rises.

I would be just as happy trading him.

Coby is a very good player but he’s a bit like a rich man’s Ben Gordon. He can carry your team or crater it since he’s streaky and needs the ball in his hands. As currently constructed the Bulls are one star player away from being right in the thick of it. If you’re trading Coby it better be either for a high draft pick or for a disgruntled star who fits the roster that is in need of a change of scenery.

Personally, I’d rather we keep him since his age fits our timeline. I doubt any team is giving him max money so if the Bulls want to keep him in Chicago then I’m sure they could. The question is do they view him as a cornerstone piece moving forward? Giddey and Buzelis are the future of this franchise at the moment. Coby could be a part of that for sure but only at a decent price since we need to upgrade the frontcourt. We need a scoring wing and a rim protector if we are going to eventually return to relevancy.

Return to Chicago Bulls
