Re: Political Roundtable Part XXXIV
Here's some examples of the EU taking advantage of the US, tradewise (not NATO wise):
1) Beef - France banned imports of beef from the United States because we use hormones, even though hormones occur naturally in beef and there is no scientifically valid way to test for excess levels of hormones in beef. We took them to court in the WTO and they lost so France gave us a quota for certified organic beef but has monkeyed around with that as well. We are a big beef (and pork) exporter and being denied this extremely lucrative market really hurts our livestock producers.
2) Similar story with wheat - the EU claims our genetically modified grains are dangerous even though we have been eating them since the 70s with no statistically significant ill effects. EU claims, well, some day in the future we'll find out something bad happens and then we'll be sorry. Sued them in the WTO and they lost and they've basically been ignoring the ruling, last time I checked in 2010.
3) Airbus - EU subsidizes the crap out of airbus, which sucks for Boeing. We don't subsidize Boeing.
The EU is not guilt free in all this. They have been extremely stubborn on these issues. I would love for the EU to abandon airbus subsidies in exchange for tariff relief and the ability to send high quality US beef to EU restaurants. That would be a good silver lining. Not going to happen, of course.

Although the details are intriguing. He was born in the US but left to live in Mexico until four years ago, does not speak English and in fact his native language is Tzotzil, a Mayan language (!!! wow!). So the trooper pulls over the car he's in, asks him if he's in the US legally, dude does not speak any English so the officer incorrectly and arguably illegally concludes he's in the US illegally, but if the dude doesn't speak English I mean... What's he supposed to do, let him go? But if he's able to produce a birth certificate and a social security card they should have immediately let him go.
Not a super convincing case (that the trooper did anything wrong) but it's clear there needs to be some sort of due process for edge cases like this.

Paywalled but I assume they're going to say "oops, our sector relies on imported genius, and Trump is not only shutting off that spigot but making it so that geniuses don't want to come here anymore"
idiots

Hard to read past the part where they claim U.S. economic growth is slow. Right wing falsehood, if these guys believe that trash they deserve what they got. Numb nuts all the way down. Being a billionaire doesn't make you smart! Says more about how much of a jerk you are than anything else.

Re: Political Roundtable Part XXXIV
Interestingly, Trump cannot gaslight the stock market, which is plummeting in reaction to Trump trying to pin the current meltdown on the Federal Reserve Chair. God what an idiot. He really thinks no one in the stock market has taken an introductory graduate level macroeconomics class, where they discuss the "discovery" of rational expectations in the late 70s, where we learn that the market's default expectation is that your central banker will be forced to bow to your political pressure to print money unless you can credibly commit to NOT DOING THAT.
EVERYBODY KNOWS THIS. Everybody whose career relies on making money from the stock market knows that RULE NUMBER ONE of NOT SCARING THE BEJEEZZUS OUT OF THE STOCK MARKET is DON'T PUT POLITICAL PRESSURE ON YOUR CENTRAL BANKER TO PRINT MONEY (by lowering interest rates). EVERYONE. KNOWS. THIS.

In Japanese so you gotta read the subtitles.
The American people were so incredibly stupid to elect Golfy, a clearly mentally defective and naive person.
