The New York Knicks had won 16 straight against the Detroit Pistons heading into their game on Dec. 7.

But in a historic turnaround season in Detroit, the Pistons turned the tables on the Knicks, winning that and the next three — taking the season series and setting up a scintillating First-Round matchup opening today (6 ET) at MSG.

This season, the Pistons became the second team to triple their win total in NBA history, rebounding from 14 to 44 victories, led by All-Star Cade Cunningham’s breakout season.

Cade On Parade: Cade (career-highs of 26.1 ppg & 9.1 apg, with 6.1 rpg) joined Oscar Robertson to become the second player to put up at least 25 points, five rebounds and nine assists in a season at the age of 23 or younger

Beasts From Three: Complementing Cade, free-agent signee Malik Beasley added 16.3 points and 3.9 3-pointers on 41.6 3P% – becoming the fourth player in NBA history with at least 300 3s made in a season (Ant Edwards became the 5th just 9 minutes later)

Detroit Stand Up: The Pistons are back in the Playoffs for the first time since 2018-19 and seeking their first Playoff victory since 2008


The Knicks are ready to battle in the Big Apple, though. They’ve been the 3rd-best team in the Eastern Conference since Dec. 15, led by one of the strongest starting lineups in the league.

New York ranked 2nd in points scored by its starters this season (94.0). That mark jumps to 99.6 with the quintet of Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and Karl-Anthony Towns

The City On His Shoulders: Brunson finished 2nd in total clutch points this season, leading to New York’s 19-12 record in clutch games – 5th-best in the league

KAT Attack: Towns dropped 24.4 pts and 12.8 reb (2nd) on 52.6/42 percent shooting splits this year. That’s the fourth time he’s averaged at least 20 and 10 on 50/40 shooting splits in his career

Saturday's matchup is the first time the Knicks and Pistons have tipped off in the Playoffs since 1992. The Knicks took that First-Round series 3-2 behind Naismith Hall Of Fame center Patrick Ewing, who put up 23.4 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks a game in the series.
