MEM/ORL...Ja/Franz

Post#1 » by Skybox » Sat Apr 19, 2025 4:01 pm

This would probably require a new GM with some cojones in ORL...which I'm hoping for regardless. I think Ja for Franz works straight up, contract-wise and I know there'd be a ton of disagreement about who's worth more (I say Franz is far more complete and makes for a nice complementary core with Bame and JJJ and Edey)....but Ja is a dawg among dawgs, electrifying player...just imagine the sparks from a Suggs/Morant backcourt :o

ORL sends: Franz Wagner (38.7m est. + 4 more up to 51), DEN 25 frp #24
MEM sends: Ja Morant (36.7m + 3 more up to 45m), Jaylen Wells (1.9m + 2 more)
*MEM does not have a frp this summer. Honestly, I don't know if this would fly for either side's fans, but I think it's fair.

The case for MEM...Franz is no drama, absolutely sound in every aspect of the game, including underrated defense (it's not just good, it's very good). He's a legit 6'10 and so fundamentally sound...I've never seen anyone finish with such consistent full extension - he makes full use of his length. He's up and down as a 3pt shooter, but absolutely a threat. He may not show up on the Top 10 plays often, but he'll quietly put up just as many points, more efficiently as well as a bunch of assists and rebounds every night. I think, in a vacuum, Franz is a better overall younger player and drops right into a vacant spot as an oversized SF who can handle a fair amount of playmaking. He'll never be in the headlines for anything but excellent basketball.

For ORL...Ja is one of the most exciting, high-profile PGs in the NBA. He plays an "in your face/fear noone" style of super athletic but not always efficient hoops. Slide him into a backcourt with high-intensity 3&D Suggs and you have one of the most athletic, wild backcourts in the league - who also complement each other's games very well. Wells balances the salaries and the value, with ORL sending a late frp (which some will argue is too much and some will argue isn't enough). KCP slides to the 3 (along with Wells) for more ferocious 3&D. Paolo shares the bulk of the offensive load with the same kind of fire within. ORL bets on Ja, in a stable environment, once again joining Paolo as a true young face of the NBA...and ORL bets he stays out of trouble and keeps his gun in his pants. Every game's a sellout and every fastbreak is a highlight.

Memphis counters with Ja + Vince Jr for Wagner + Black

This.. Ja is knucklehead. Does not fit the image that Orl Leadership is looking for.

Ja isn't getting anywhere near this value, very talented player with serious character and injury issues.

I expect many strong, clean character, no-issues guys here posting their important opinions about Ja.

Me too…but I was also expecting casuals to not understand how valuable and complete a player Franz is. So far, you’re right

I’m interested in basketball, not a monastery…people willing to forget KCP’s “fame” for being the only NBA player to wear an ankle monitor in-game.

Ja has been a knucklehead…otherwise, he’s the electrifying face of the NBA. My proposal is a bet that Coach Mosely is the “dad” that gets the most out of him with the least turbulence. I acknowledge the risk, that’s also why a guy as valuable as Wells is thrown in as well.

I think this needs a third team who can convert Franz into a high end guard. As good as Franz is, the Grizzlies would need a PG after this.

The OP involves 2 great, elite, franchise-level players, there can be no discussion around that premise. Franz has been wanted in Memphis even before he got drafted. I can go on an on how these two guys are great.

He is one more tantrum away from major suspensions I suspect. I would wait and see what Zion fetches then make a similar offer for Ja.

Magic have plenty of assets to achieve that while keeping Franz.

So you can call them out without reading them? precog level stuff. Honored to be a witness to your crusade.

Not really.

So you're saying all of their picks, plus Anthony Black, Da Silva, WCJ, or any other useful role player, isn't enough to land them an upgrade at PG? Hell, I'd even throw in Suggs for the right player. But Franz is a cornerstone, they shouldn't move him.

Most people don’t care about his off court antics. Simply put Ja just can’t pull this type of value. Dude’s a liability and no team wants to be the one to pay him his third contract.

So what is Memphis doing trading him at depressed value or letting him walk when he hits FA? I don’t think you would get anyone close to as good as Franz via trade. Like Zion you guys are never going to recover full value for him.

Of course...the Zion comparisons are ludicrous. Zion doesn't play - there was more talk of waiving him than collecting a haul just a few months ago. Incredible electrifying player (like Ja) but a completely different level of risk.
