Ben Simmons Next Contract?

Ben Simmons will be a UFA this summer. What type of contract do you see him getting?

Tax MLE where he goes to a contender.

I like him in Dallas, Boston if they cut ties with Jrue (via trade), OKC and Denver

He reportedly went to the Clippers because he still sees himself as a PG first and they allegedly left the door open (he's a backup big for them now). That would be disconcerting for me as a GM.

A fully bought in Simmons who plays alongside a stretch big on offense in the dunker's spot is worth more than the minimum. Any other version is not.

I really have no idea what he’s worth. Hard to think someone doesn’t give him the MLE just in case? Unguaranteed/team option etc.. though he hasn’t looked like an MLE player really.

I think from Dallas, I’d be happy if they took a shot with their taxMLE with a player option? Next season will likely fail either way here and no idea how him and Kyrie are after Brooklyn. But the 2K fit would be really good.and the defense seems like a great mix where you can have 3 of AD, PJ, Lively and him on the court in a lot of different line ups..

If his value is at the minimum level, wouldn't mind BOS giving him a look. Expectation is that Horford wants to keep playing and come back so, along with Porzingis, they have double stretch bigs to make sure he's always next to one. Tatum is essentially their PG since Jrue/Holiday/Pritchard are more like SGs so when Simmons plays that role they're used to it. They don't really have a true backup for Tatum at the 4 other than playing double big with Horford there or going extra small with Brown or Hauser playing there.

Not sure Mazulla is the right coach for him though

Probably more than a vet min, but still something small and expendable.

Yeah I think somewhere between the vet min and the tax MLE would be a good bet.

Ben Simmons' minimum salary next year is projected at $3.3M. The taxpayers MLE is projected to be $5.7M. It gets tricky when you try to sign in between that. If he takes the tax payers MLE, he hard-caps his team at the 2nd apron. NBA free agency often works in tiers. The restrictions on using exceptions often times makes it not great for guys trying to get salaries in between them. So I'm skeptical he'd get something in n=between those tow numbers. Maybe some teams offer him TPMLE but my guess is that a lot of the teams that would be most desirable to him would limit themselves to the minimum because of the flexibility they'd lose going over. And with a lot of career earnings and still the chance to earn more if this deal goes well, I could see him prioritizing fit over that extra $2.4M.

binannual exception falls between vet min and taxMLE. i can see teams offering him that after spending their MLE elsewhere

This is all pretty reasonable, so much relies on Ben's headspace though. Is he willing to commit to being a role player and doing what the team asks of him, or does he still think of himself as a star?

I think his best case scenario is the type of contract the Rockets gave out to Landale and Jeff Green, what KJ Martin got from Philly (8-10 mill a year, 1 year guaranteed multi year deal) that would really only be made so large as a purposeful trade filler contract.

Outside of that, a vet min from a Lakers/Celtics type team, or BAE, or TP-MLE tops from likely middling playoff teams.

Wouldn't be shocked if FranknCo convinced Simmons to sign a 1+1 at the min, then, he opts out to sign another 1+1 with early birds before seeing how things go. Similar to what they did with Batum Battalion and Big Government.

Though, at the same time, I could also see a team offering nearly the full MLE for his "potential" impact

If Simmons can get a 1+1 at the min to just stay in LA (either team) and get some run? I think he does that. He's always wanted to be in LA.

He can come to ORL we need a point, and we don't care about shooting.

I like him on the Kings assuming we ship out DeRozan since…

1.) None of Ellis, LaVine, Monk, or Carter appear to be true PGs. Simmons gives the Kings that PG which allows them to play those 4 guards big minutes
2.) The Kings could really use more size, length, and athleticism in the frontcourt. Simmons does just that.
3.) Sabonis ideally has an excellent defender next to him at PF. Simmons checks that box.

Obviously, Simmons isn’t a shooter, but when you have guys like Ellis, LaVine, Murray, and Sabonis around him in the starting lineup, it could work.

I wonder if Simmons would be open to joining the Kings if he was offered a $5-7 mil/year deal with a promise that he’d begin the season as the starting PG (well starting PF but the PG on offense).

Wouldn't even go a dollar over the minimum.

In a world where Dallas trades one of Washington, Gafford, or Lively, I'd be in for the taxMLE. I might be in even if they don't. Dallas can offer him a PG role offensively even when Kyrie comes back. And if we are going to continue with this outdated defense wins championship nonsense, well he can still really defend.

I still think there is a player there if a team really offers him full support. And Kidd is probably one of the best possible coaches for him.

If you’re crazy enough to offer that, Simmons is crazy enough to take it.
