From just a karmic standpoint, I'd rather have hoped and prayed for Middleton's health and return to form than hope and pray that Kuzma wasn't the worst player to see extended minutes in basketball.

Griff was incompetent but at least trying to prove himself. Doc is incompetent and realizes he's getting paid whether he's working or not, so no incentive to actually do his job.
