Definitely deserves it. Last season he made some red zone catches which I don't recall him making in previous seasons so relatively late in his career, he's developing new skills.
He's not especially tall for a TE so he's not going to high-point the ball like some other TEs and taller WRs.
But it just makes the salary cap more difficult to manage long term, though in the short term, his cap hit is probably going to be reduced compared to if he didn't get this extension.
