Pelicans Hire Troy Weaver As General Manager

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Apr 23, 2025 3:16 pm

The New Orleans Pelicans have hired Troy Weaver as general manager where he will report to Joe Dumars. The Pelicans fired David Griffin this offseason and hired Dumars as executive vice president of basketball operations.

Weaver spent last season as a consultant with the Washington Wizards after serving as general manager of the Detroit Pistons for four years.

Weaver had served as vice president and assistant GM for the Oklahoma City Thunder since 2008. He was promoted to VP of basketball operations before the 2017-18 season.

Good pick up, he drafted all of those players in Detroit. They just needed the right coach.

Yeah... Weaver has not been a good GM. Another bad retread hire by the Pels. They really need someone who cares to run that franchise.

Weaver also heavily involved in the Monty disaster hiring (but to be fair inherited Casey)

Yes, drafted Ivey, Cade, Ausar (Duran was a summer post draft trade) ...but also Killian Hayes ahead of Hali (and Deni looking really good in Portland)

RE: Cade -- there should not be much praise for drafting the runway #1 pick in every mock.
KOC (Ringer), NBADraft.net, NBA TV, Sam Vecenie, Simmons, Russillo -- literally everyone had Cade 1.
e.g.
GM doesn't get credit for falling into Lebron/Wemby etc...

His trades were mostly salary-driven or just dice rolls:
Kennard + Bruce Brown for Saddiq Bey
Snell for Dedmon
Cash for Jerami Grant
S+T Wood + 2025 FRP for Ariza/Beefstew
Ariza for Delon Wright
Mykhailiuk for Diallo
Wright for Cory Joseph
Grant for 2025 FRP (Bucks pick -- later given to Knicks for Duren)
Knox/Bey for Wiseman
And a bunch of salary dumps leading up to 2024 trade DL

And tried out tons of busts/retreads: Jahlil Okafor, Josh Jackson, Dennis Smith Jr, Mavin Bagley, Kevin Knox, Plumlee, Ellington, Olynyk

Nothing bad or great to point at IMO

Damn... I'm sorry Pelicans fans. While he's not the worst GM imaginable this is definitely an uninspiring hire. It is also quite ironic that Weaver and Trajan have essentially swapped positions.

so no praise for drafting the #1 pick, but you would criticize him if he didn't. so it doesn't matter what he did, he can't win in your book. you hate him regardless
