Patrick Dumont Wants Mavs To Hire Experienced Exec To Work With Nico Harrison

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Apr 23, 2025 6:43 pm

The Dallas Mavericks' decision to trade away Luka Doncic has largely landed with Nico Harrison, but he has continued in his position running the team's front office. "Fire Nico" chants became a common refrain at Mavericks' games, but Harrison has largely retained the support of Patrick Dumont. However, Dumont is believed to have interest in hiring another executive to work with Harrison.

"I was talking to somebody who's in an ownership group of another Western Conference team recently, and they basically said, 'I hate to say it, but this is going to be his legacy. This trade's his legacy. Like he's never going to work in the NBA again," said ESPN's Tim MacMahon on The Right Time With Bomani Jones.

"And there are people around the league who are just like 'You have to fire him. That's the only way to begin the healing process with the Mavericks' fan base,'" added MacMahon.

"But Patrick Dumont is not there. He's not there yet. Now, the 'In Nico We Trust' era has ended. He wants him to bring in an experienced exec. I think he's realized he's got to have some checks and balances that weren't in place.

"I think this has been a very educational experience for Patrick Dumont in his first full year as an NBA governor. Also, the realization [that] in this world [the] management's not the stars. The stars are the guys on the floor. That's what this whole league revolves around... The superstars are the guys who drive business in this league not the bosses."

I think he was always aware of the trade process and this is saving face

You'd have to be very unfamiliar with NBA basketball to be fine with a Luka trade

The average Mavs fan would be smarter than Nico Harrison…why? Because they would never trade away Luka freaking Doncic.

The guy traded the one guy the roster was built around for a 32 year old albeit uber talented with the nickname “street clothes” because of how injury prone he is. Honestly, even a casual basketball fan wouldn’t make a move that short-sighted if they were GM hence all the outrage.

Calling out another fan for criticizing the Adelson's tenure feels like a fool's errand.

Patrick Dumont is widely reported to have zero NBA knowledge.

He has only spoken in vague generalities about the sport and the league (vapid claims like "I'm a fanatic!").
Once during a public interview he awkwardly called the Finals "The championship games".
He has said publicly, I rely on the expertise of Nico.

He's also shown in his actions that he's completely clueless about the current level of player power.
e.g. On Feb 2nd told the Dallas Morning News about Luka's time off -- “If you want to take a vacation, don’t do it with us"

Cuban was not a good GM, but he was willing to lose money.
Recently, Cuban said (in a public Facebook comment during an argument with another former Mavs employee) that "the team was profitable only twice in 23 years" and "lost hundreds of millions of dollars."
Cuban paid the luxury tax, he never raised ticket prices, and he spent tons on the arena/locker room/practice facilities.

Dumont and the Adelsons are ALSO not good GMs, same as Cuban.
(In fact they have taken very bad advice from someone who is very likely a bad GM).
But they are far cheaper than Cuban was.

NBA love doesn't make you a good GM (Cuban, Ishbia).
But being a bad basketball owner AND a cheap owner is the kiss of death.

Personally, I'm waiting for the Adelsons to show ANY modicum of basketball success before giving them the benefit of the doubt.

This criticism feels more than apt.
